Fan Clutch Replacement?

Hey,

My fan clutch went out today when I was driving home from Tech School on my 1991 Toyota 4Runner w/the 3VZ-E engine. Has anybody ever replaced one or know how hard it is?

the fan unbolts from the fan clutch. The CLutch is held to the pulley/fan support bracket with 4 12mm nuts. The Blade is held to the clutch with 4 10mm nuts.

How did it "go out"?

It was my understanding that a fan clutch is a fluid clutch that works off of the temperature of the coolant. I'd also like to know how something like that would eventually break, being a fluid clutch.

Mine has gone bad. All the fluid leaked out and the fan would freewheel - not cooling the engine. You can buy a new seal and fluid for the fan clutch but I didn't mess with that. I got a new fan clutch and it took about 30 minutes to replace. The hardest part is unbolting the fan clutch from the pulley assembly. I think I had to take out my fan shroud to remove the fan/fan clutch assembly. Once out of the truck it was easy to swap the fan onto the new clutch and then bolt the sucker back in.

i thinks its bad beacause i can spin the fan with absolutley no resistance and it continues to spin for about 2 min after the engine is off, also the fan wobbels about 2 inches out when spinning. i had my auto instructor look at it and he agrees. but what would you think about replacing it with a hayden electric fan? right now im just planning on replacing the fan clutch.

so from what I am understanding you don't have to remove the radiator?

shouldn't have to. just the shroud, fan, and clutch. also drain the rad slightly as you will have to remove the upper hose

You can just refill the viscous clutch.

Here you can see some pics of when I did mine.

The Toyota part # for the silicon oil is 08816-03001. I used two.

IMO it will be easier to just replace the clutch or refill it (as shown above) than going through the work of putting an electric one in.

you can get the "hayden" fan from advance or kragen, for about $100, a guy at school put one on his 2.7 and gained a little MPG, plus on deep water crossings you can turn them off, i guess that could help a bit, i've been looking at them, but can't talk myself into one yet

Iam in the same boat, about to replace my fan clutch, I was told by an old timer that its worth to buy the factory fan clutch because the haydens wear out fast. So.. I went to the dealer, 146.00. Well Iam in there Iam going to replace the radiator ,fan shroud, water pump, and thermostat.
