Extremely hard to get out of low range
Hey all! I picked up an R151f from an'86 turbo truck that I am installing behind my 3.4 swap in my '89 4Runner It has been sitting for a year or so when I salvaged it. Long story short, it is REALLY hard to get it out of 4-low. You can seriously force it, bit it's tally hard. I only ran it for a few minutes before parting it out, but it was stuck in 4-low. With the shifter and cover off I pried it back. It goes into low nice and easy, but it still is really really hard to get out. Any thoughts?

Shifter seat bushings? Those are a wear item that very few people change. I am getting ready to do them on my 85 W56. Honestly when I got my 85 I don't think it had been in 4wd for years and probably never in 4lo. I had to force it in and out of 4lo. Every time I would drive it I would put it in and out of 4lo in my driveway. Its much easier now but it took about a hundred ish times. Also mine is much easier with the clutch in even if I am on level ground in neutral and not moving.

The bushing may be a bit worn, but even with the shifter out, using the pry bar, it takes quite a bit of force to disengage it. What also seems weird is how easy it goes INTO 4LO.

Assuming the tcase is out of your truck and on the bench, you might try loosening the hex plug on the top right of the case (passenger side). The detent spring and ball for the 2-4 shift rail are behind that. Perhaps the detent is hanging up for some reason. Loosening (or removing) that hex plug will take the spring pressure off the detent and allow you to determine if it, or something else, is causing the issue.
Just be careful when removing the detent plug, that you don't lose the spring and/or ball.

Another question. I have the trans from my 3.0 out also in the same state of disassembly from removal. I noticed that one of the t case shifter have a M-shaped spring thing. Do both teams have that? If not which one uses it?

I'm probably wrong, but I am pretty sure only the xfer case has the spring. It pushes the stick back from the lo-hi to the 2/4wd side.
And that plate looking springy metal gasket, that only has one orientation also. don't think one can mess it all up, because the top piece has the holes at different widths.
