Exhaust wraps...???
All right here we go,pretty soon i will be puting a cat. back exhaust system in my 89 4runner(it's a 3.0L) and i was thinking of wraping the exhaust from as far as i can get to the engine...to...about 1 foot from the end of the tail pipe...then i would be able to remove the heat shields on the pipe its self(which usally rattle )and be happy... also if i do this it should, increase exhaust flow and in trun give me more back pressure,which means more power ...i was woundering if anyone else has done this or thought of this ...I've done it on motorcycles and out comes are great...so why not do it on my truck...please feel free to leave me feed back on if i should do it or not ...if i decide to do it will will repost with pics. and perfromace status..thnx

Wrapping the exhaust pipe? With what and what difference does a wrapper have on internal airflow in a tube? It would hold the heat in the tube, and maybe make the tube rust faster because it would hold moisture even when it got warmer?

it think the would reduce the airflow greatly. i always hear that wrapping headers does that and it rots them out quickly. plus thats about 150 bucks in wrap

Wrapping the pipes from the manifolds back to the cat should make a difference, but after that and you are wasting your money IMO.
Heat wraps for the exhaust keep the heat in the pipe, more heat in the pipe means the exhaust gasses retain more of their energy meaning they travel faster, and the faster the exhaust gasses get out of the pipe the more power the vehicle will make.
This could also help with the y-pipe cooking the valves on the 5th and 6th cylinder...just something else to think about.
Also if you wheel alot, you will get moisture trapped in the wrapping, making the pipe rust faster, so a better option would be ceramic coating, but thats alot of work (remove everything and ship it off for a week +), and slightly more expensive
