Exhaust

Did a search and didn't find much on what I'm looking for.......

I've got to replace the exhaust on the truck I just bought. Both the cat and the muffler have debri in them and rattle if I shake them. What would you recommend?

I'm looking for something that will help out all around......delete the cat?...........highflow muffler?.......brand?.......I prefer quiet, as close to stock as we can get and achieve some upgrades

Thanks for any ideas or experiences!

Id recomend a hi-flow cat (I run a SS magnaflow) and perhaps a flowmaster 60 series or something.

Im not that aware of mufflers that are really quiet.

Bump the pipe up to 2.25" (stock is 2 1/8") aswell.

Depends on how much you'd like to spend? if you want something really quiet, go with 2.25 piping and like an 18" or a 22" magnaflow muffler... I think that would result in a pretty quiet tone. The exhaust I have is a 13" borla turbo muffler but if you're going for quiet, i'd pass that up.

The muffler is full of the cat, probably!

When I got my 4R, the PO had installed some Borla cat back for another vehicle and cut the cat out. It was waaaaaaaaay too loud for my taste and the muffler was positioned above the rear axle. You could see where the axle had hit the muffler before, it was recalculous. I had to get a cat to pass smog here and I wanted a quieter exhaust, but I wanted to keep the free flow muffler. So I had an exhaust shop put a cat on it, move the muffler to where it was supposed to be and then put a resonater behind that to take more sound out. It gives me an interesting growl, is free flow and not too loud!

Sorry so long winded.

Your exhaust sounds ... interesting... what does it sound like when you hold RPM's. My truck rev's high (gears), so I'm wondering if it would just get annoying or if I'd go deaf first.

I just want to stock sound with the highest flow I can achieve...............I know it is possible to be exact but that is my perfect case.

I'm thinking about deleting the cat and installing a stock muffler. My questions is, am I achieving anything? Is the Cat the problem or the muffler most of the time?

you gotta get rid of that stock muffler if you want flow, all the stock muffler is doing is restricting

its not obnoxiously loud if thats what you're worried about. at about 2.5-3k it forms into a very nice low toned hum. I have a video of me driving around that I can link here... its kind of a long video, but I purposely hold the RPMS to show you guys what it all sounds like.... I dont really need to tell you to listen for it, because my truck is very loud and is highly noticeable.

keep the cat.. its good for keeping things quiet, the Magnaflow one doesn't restrict much flow, and you WILL need one if you ever need to get emissions tested..

high flow cat, a long magnaflow muffler (longer is usually a lower tone, and less raspy), and don't run a turn-down.. make sure the exhaust tip clears the body..

Zachw90- What kind of power/acceleration increase did you notice with the LCE street header and LCE pro-flo full exhaust? I'm running an '86 22r 5spd with 31's also and barely pushing 60mph on the highway!

Thank you. I put more money into it than its worth though. but Im very proud of it

It draws alot of attention to me though... If I slowly drive by a ricer or another muscle car, they'll look at me, WOT and fly by me... even if I maintain 65 mph its sitting there just humming since im at 2.9-3k rpms. So its not only loud, but you get to see idiots day in and out

Lol well you see the thing is with the 3.4... it doesn't have a restricted exhaust like the 3.0 did. it'll make it louder and more free low, but i dont think it'll be as much as a difference as the 3.0. know what I mean? haha yeah, 22re will always be ricey. could always do straight pipes...?

true true but the sound is what im looking for out of a 3.4 though, not as much as improving the flow but getting that tone yours has. yah i could strait pipe mine but i need the cat for aircare and i have to do it every year i have a cherry bomb glasspack for a muffler right now and i like how it sounds in the bottom end but not the rice factor. cant wait to have the money for a 4runner with a v6 then use my truck as a strict wheeler

yeah. a 3.4 will go in mine eventually. but my 3vze only has 137k... so I figured i'd baby it as much as i could before it gets tired and a 3.4 comes to mind and is more practical

3.4s have a different sound than 3.0s... i dont know if they'd be the same. 3.4s sound more high pitched, rather than the drone sound a 3.0 has. you could try it though? 2.7s sound more like 3.0s in my opinion.

yah no point in droping a goos 3.0L but yah once it gets tierd or you get tierd of it drop that 3.4 in hehe.

well 3.4 might be more high pitched but i noticed they dont rice as much near the top end. the 3.0L seems to woop more on the top end but you seemed to find a good tone that makes a nice strong sound near the top. 2.7 4cyl sounding like a 3.0L? really i have never heard a 2.7 that doesnt sound ricey lol.
