Thumbs up Excessive grey smoke after ENGINE SWAP

Hey ya'll

i got an 89 pickup with the 22RE in it and i just did a swap and put in another 22RE motor from the fine folks at 209yota1 in Modesto, Ca. I really liked their service and they have been super helpful but they are not yet sure about this problem.

Basically when i started up the new motor it starts smoking after 30 seconds. it eventually goes away once its been driven for 10 minutes or so but it puts out a pretty stinky cloud that I would call grey although I suppose it may be blue. its worse in the cold.

new PCV valve. i had the intake manifold re machined and followed their directions using silicone just around the 3 water ports, and I am not losing coolant so its probably not water.

I did have to rebuild the CTS plug (couldn't find the pigtail for love nor money) and also the CTS is new, have anyof you had smoke look grey with running too rich due to CTS sending all cold signal? Its definitely not black smoke.

I am seriously hoping its not a problem in the engine i bought. anyone have any other ideas for diagnostics here?

things I am thinking of doing tonight:
-check PCV (its new and i checked in going in but will check hoses for flow and re-check valve)
-re-ckeck timing (did it twice once when it strted up cold and once when warm ... right on 5 degrees)

thanks in advance. i've never posted here only read but this had been the best resource imaginable for this swap. so thankful.

MJ

Put your hand up next to the exhaust then give it a sniff, your hand not the exhaust. What does it smell most like?

"Blue smoke for a few seconds on start up" is often a sign of bad valve guides. The oil in the rocker space drains through the guides overnight, and gets burned off.

Any possibility of valve guides?

It is possible but I would have to kick that over to the builder. It doesn't seem likely since it smokes for at least 10 minutes and every time I start it up from cold or let it get a bit cold smokes pretty bad. Definitely not a few seconds and it's not on startup but 30 seconds in. Feeling pretty lost here... This is a remanufactured motor not a junkyard swap so it seems like everything should be fine inside.

So, you don't know what was done to the motor?
Do you have a receipt that list the parts that were replaced?
Is it a long block or a short block?
How many miles have you put on it to break it in?
I'm just asking these questions for more clarity.

How cold is it right now where you live?

These engines do produce quite a bit of steam when cold (part of the combustion process). Does it look like a medium grey in person and not white?

When the engine is warm, do you see this smoke?

Do you have a catalytic converter installed?

I just want to separate normal 22R-E cold starts from a problem with your new engine before you go further.

It looks medium grey to me. I posted a video above. It doesn't look white to my eye. I do have a cat yeah. What can happen with the cat?

I appreciate the reply.

Not knowing if you have broke in the new motor yet, your rings could also not bedded (seated) or not seated properly.

How many miles on the new engine?? Did you perform any kind of engine break-in routine immediately on getting it running??

What do the spark plugs look like right after it has smoked for 5 minutes, or more??

I'm thinking they may have to take their new engine back.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry i missed a few ...Looking at them on my phone at work.

I am 150 miles into break in. I broke in the cam as instructed varying the rpms from 1800 to 2200 for 20 mins.

It's a long block and I attached a pic of what they did. New chromoly rings, resized rods, reground crankshaft, new camshaft (I think), rebuilt rocker assembly...

Will inspect plugs tomorrow. Need a break from the truck for the night.

Thanks again so much for your inquiries. Couldn't do it without you guys. Wish I could send you all a beer.

Attached some pics of the spark plugs. #1 looks a bit fouled but not sure of its normal while rings are seating to have some of that. There was a bit of oil in the well too.. .. smoke seems reduced but definitely stil present. Could be warmer weather it's been real nice up here (Denman island British Columbia)

Definitely looks like number 1 is the culprit. Id say that is not normal for new. Possibly a bad valve seal or guide as mentioned previously. What kind of warranty did they give you?
