Error Code14…Bad idle…Missing.Help please
Hi Y'all,
My 1990 22re pickup gave me a code 14, it misses when accelerating and stalls sometimes when idling. I started diagnosing::
The ignition coil tests virtually no resistance on primary (spec says .5 -.7 thats like nothing right?) and 15k the secondary coil. I checked the distributor generator (pick-up coil) by putting +&- leads on either side of the plug that Im holding in the picture below and the ohmmeter is showing zero resistance. Am I doing this test wrong? FSM says there should be 140-180 ohms. Assuming the pick-up coil is bad, am I in for an entire distributor assembly or can I change just the coil? Would that be smart if I could or should I just replace it all?
p.s. FSM says to check air gap of distributor, but how the heck do you get the rotor and signal generator to line up ( I turned the ignition a few times but it wouldn't line up )
Thanks for your time and any and all insights will be Appreciated!!!!

I don't think you can adjust airgap in the later years. It is what it is. What does the manual say a code 14 is? Does the miss happen when the engine is warm? I would check plugs and wires first. I usually don't mess with the pick-up coil or coil pack unless it doesn't start with no fire. Having said that I have replaced the pick-up coils in three of the Toyota trucks I own. I have never replaced the distributors. Unlikely it will cause the issue. I would look at the fuel system. Filter and injectors. Long shot would be exhaust. Clogged cat if you have one.

thanks for the reply.. code 14 is " no igf signal to ecu 6 times in succession." As for the misses yeah it misses across all gears, worse from 1st-3rd. have you put a multimeter on the pickup coils you've replaced? thanks

yes I specd it out. Cold and warm. If it was close to being out I replaced. I tried to wobble the distributor shafts and they didn't wobble at all. I would say your on the right track with that code. Check your connections for corrosion. The wires to the pick up coil can be the issue. I have never had to replace the coil or igniter, except on my 81. No spark was the situation on that.
