My sons 1990 3.0 V6 4Runner has issues when it's first started in the morning. It takes about ten to fifteen minutes to get it running smoothly. It's five speed and if you give it to much throttle it wants to die. Once it's warmed up though it runs like a champ. Any remedies for this? So far I've changed the fuel filter, it has a clean K&N filter in it. It passed a smog check with flying colors, fresh Mobil 1 oil and filter change. The plug wires are new but I have not checked the plugs yet. Could the plugs have anything to do with the warm up issues? I don't really know what else to check.

Does it did when you throttle it..or does it not let you rev too high before it drops, like a pendulum? If that's what it's doing, if may be a vacuum leak, one that's small enough to screw it up at start up only. I would check the plugs, as you mentioned..they're almost always a culprit for this kind of stuff.

You don't live in the vast frozen north right

Does it take that long to register as warm on the temp guage?
Does it then run good when warm?

Have you done any of the troubleshooting flow charts?

If it takes 10 minutes to register as warmed up..

you should remove, clean , and test the ECT and Temp guage sensors. Since your down there it woudn't hurt to do them all, BVSV(Bimetal switch for egr) ect.

Verify the coolant mixture.

Remove inspect and test the thermostat. If it's an aftermarket cheapy you might want to consider an OEM dual stage.

Aside from coolant system problems I can think of two others. Failing O2 sensor that takes too long to preheat, maybe condensation in the pipes not helping this.

Sticky injectors not wanting to open fully untill they get a bit of heat soak.

Yes it does not register on the temp gauge until you get it nice and warmed up. If you hit the gas quickly it wants to stall out, if you gradually press the gas pedal it does not falter. And I live in so cal so not cold here ha ha

If you can feel the heat in the water pipes but it's not showing on the guage, that would indicate a "plagued" sensor. It's not alot of help after the fact but remeber distilled water only for the coolant system.
