My 22RE ticks like a champ, it has ever since I've had it.

Could be time for a new timing belt or a valve adjustment. I have been lucky so far with 300k on the original timing belt and head gaskets. I have been driving it for the last year and a half expecting to be left on the side of the road at any moment, but so far it looks like the valves and seals, and possibly rings will go first. It burns and leaks oil like crazy( at least 1 qt every 50 miles, and it ticks, knocks smokes, and reluctantly starts after it sits for more than 8 hrs(0 compression in #6 cylinder) but we still go forward every day!!

My 22re ticks right along as well but the 3.o makes a totally different ticking noise. The 3.o does not have a rocker assembly to tick about.

Best way to make it go away is to turn up the mp3 player No ticking at all.

I had a 22re in the last truck and it ticked loud until I fixed a leak on the egr tube... then it ticked less loud

My V6 has a steady tick but can't find any leaks so it will remain as is...

and don't get down on the 3vze... imo it is much better than the 22re and I have owned both... there are a lot of 3vze haters on the forum b/c they can't beat an old lady with a grocery cart from a dead stop at the lights with their 22's haha

I don't mind the 3.0. What I as well as the OP need to figure out what is causing it. I know the ticking is not right and is causing issues. I'm only getting about 10-13 mpg and now that it's ticking so much more it's really gutless (since the puddle incident).

You guys realize original post is 2 years old right? BTW my 90 4Runner ticks all the time,I just turn radio on if I get tired of listening to it.My engine has 234,000 on it and uses no oil,it might have been rebuilt in the past.I put my hood up and it looks like it just came from the factory its so clean.

Injectors are usually the loudest tick you can hear; when you are cruising down the road try buttoning off the throttle completely on a long downhill run and see if it magically goes away while you are off the throttle. The ECU should be dropping the injector pulsewidth to 0 for that period, e.g., not firing the injectors at all. The moment you get back on the throttle your injectors will see duty and the ticking will resume. It is very very easy to hear this effect on my 22RE (1600 miles on rebuilt motor including Witchhunter reconditioning of my injectors) even at highway speeds with all of the wind noise.

And if you think that is bad... try a chevy LS small block w/o the engine covers -- the ONLY reason those things are put on the LS series is to muffle injector tick!
