engine swap with or without transmission ???'

Hello I just started pulling my engine out of my 1992 extra cab truck it is a 3.0 and I am putting same type motor back in. I bought the toy service manual and am following the step by step instructions. Only thing is I have a Auto Transmission and it is 4x4, the book says to pull tranmission and engine but crawling around under my truck this looks huge. My question is what have you guys done on engine swaps pulled just motor or tranny both and also do I pull transfercase.... is the tranny and transfercase all one I haven't got a real good look yet and this is my first toy... please help thanks

You can just unbolt the tranny from the engine and unbolt the converter and leave the transmission and transfercase in the truck! But if you want to pull the engine and tranny at the same time its going to be a tight fit and will be a pita to do! So if you dont need to pull the transmission than dont. What I have done in the passed is pull the trany out along with the transfercase, then pull the engine but I have a transsmission shop to work in when Im home at my dads! If you need any more advice I could help I have pulled a few engine and transmissions! Later 94toy4x4fever

I dont need to pull tranny I just need to do engine swap. I was just following toy service manual. Ya it looked like it was going to be a tight pull and I wanted to know if pulling just engine was recommended (easier). I am trying to do this job easy as possible. thanks for the help 94toy4x4fever.

'proper' service requires pulling the engine and trans together.
'practical' service means you can pull the engine by itself.

If you pull the eng and trans together, you have to put them togehter on the bench... and that means all the issues you come across doing so are settled before you try to put the tngine back in the chassis.

It is a major league pain in the Richard Nixon to pull engine/transmission/transfer case. It's possible, but it is a huge chore.

I pulled the engine and transmission out of a donor truck for my 94 4runner a month ago, thinking that it would be easier to cut the body to pieces and pull it out as one. Even with a cutting torch, chop saw and backhoe it did not want to come out. Pulling just the blown engine out of my truck was much easier. It lifted right out. Make sure you have about 3 feet worth of extensions and a universal joint to reach the top bellhousing bolts.

Bolting the torqe converter and cover plate back on after the engine is back in.... now that is a good time. Good luck from someone who went thorugh this two weeks ago.
