Engine swap from 90 to 92?

Does anyone know if a 90 engine would be a direct swap into a 92? Assuming they are both 3vze auto 4x4. Will the elec. connections, power steering, alternator all work the same? Thanks for info. I would think the motor mounts might be differen't. How about the tranny?

Hmm that's what I thought. I just need to make sure the 90 is an auto right? Thanks.

Anyone know how far back the V06 HG recall went? to 90? When did they change from the abestos HG to the one that blows? hehe

You may have some wiring harness issues. Not sure when the throttle bodies changed over, but there may be a difference there. (i.e. TPS)

The changes weren't major. Any issues should easily be solved.

The recall was from '88 to late '96, I believe. Try calling the dealer and see if they can track the motor if it was done already.

The 90 runner has 142K with a rusty chasis...think it's worth $500 just for the engine to swap into my 92?

FYI they never got the 3vze out with an asbestos HG. They banned asbestos while the engine was in design. Probably would be a much better engine now adays was it not for that.

My '90 P/U was not part of the recall. I was told that it was because it DID have asbestos head gaskets. I got about 135k out of it before it siezed from different problems (of my own doing - nothing that Toyota did).

I've never researched it, but I surmise that they may have been building the engines in a couple of different places, and one place was getting asbestos gaskets, and the other wasn't - in anticipation of the ban. In any case, I'm sure that they were using up the asbestos gaskets while they still could.

Hmmm I've read quite a few threads on here saying the engine was designed to run like a champ with an asbestos head gasket but it got outlawed before it hit production.

So, the '92 motor is shot and you have the option to buy the whole '90 4rnr for $500...motor included? How much for just the motor?

If the overall condition is OK, and you have space, I'd say do it. You could probably recover your costs, and then some, by parting the rest out.

Those were my thoughts. Or keep the spare parts for yours. It doesn't hurt to have some backup if/when things break....which they seem to do.
