Engine Starting Problems

I have a V6 94 runner with about 112000 miles on it, that randomly has problems starting. When you go to start the 4runner sometimes there is a click from somewhere either under the passenger side dash or on the firewall on the passenger side and then the power drains like ther battery is dead. After repeated attempts of turning the key the engine will finally start like normal. I have looked all through the threads on starter problems, but I still can't pinpoint the where my problem is coming from. This problem seemed to occur more often in the winter. Autozone has tested my battery and they said it is fine. If anyone can help me pinpoint where my problem is, either solenoid, starter, etc. I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Mine did this this winter, I beleive it was the solenoid. I just had my starter rebuilt, so when I get it back in I will know for sure. If its not the solenoid its the realy underhood....

Thanks Snorkeldepth, I saw that link during my search but I'm not too mechanically inclined when it comes to cars. I'm taking the 4runner into the shop for new rear coils, so I'm going to have them check out the starter and solenoid.

Where do you live? CCA (cold cranking amps) of the battery might be the problem if you live somewhere that gets really cold during the winter. Depending on your temperature conditions, a battery with higher CCA would help a LOT.

Click solved - Pinging next

Hi: I've battled starter relay click issues for a long time. My ignition switch was intermittent. After some key wiggling of the mechanical key hole ( to line up anything slightly off), then a few solid key turnings - mine finally starts fine for the last few weeks. We're putting in a new toyota electronic ignition switch to hold this hopefully solved solution. And THANKS to ALL who advised this last year.
For pinging uphill in the heat I'm going to try RedlineSI-1....Anyone have pros or cons on this?????
Enjoy the warmth this Spring!!!!
