Engine removal question

Engine removal question
I'm pulling the engine and tranny on my '94 2WD pickup. The instructions I have talk about removing the #1 frame crossmember: is this really necessary and how do I know for sure which one it is?
Can someone tell me if there's a single place to disconnect the wiring harness that runs under the intake air manifold? I've pretty much disconnected all the sensors I can see but the harness continues onto the wheel well on the passenger side; there must be somewhere to disconnect it but I can't seem to find it.
Would appreciate any help, advice, etc.
TIA

22re or 3.0?
On the 22RE, no reason to remove any cross member. I'd use a load leveler though, easier to manipulate the engine balance.
There is no way to remove the harness from the 22RE, unless you remove it from the cab (at the ECU) and bring it back through the firewall. Disconnect all the wires, LABEL THEM, and take some photos of how it routes. That harness makes engine removal a bit of a pain.

On a 2WD the #1 is under the oil pan. Easy to remove.
Unplug the wires from the computer and push them through the firewall into the engine comp. Lay them on top of engine and pull the engine out.

Excuse my ignorance, but I don't understand why you'd pull the wiring out of the cab. Remove the upper intake, label and unplug your connections on the block and tranny, pull it through the center of the lower intake, tie it up, and your ready to go.
Seems much easier and less time consuming than trying to pull everything through the firewall...

why would you want to pull the intake>> istead of just pulling the wires out of the cab.it takes 3 minutes..this way you can pull the harness with the motor

You're not pulling the entire intake, only the upper plenum. Seems that harness has a good seal at the firewall while cutting and pulling will only risk shearing off connections.
Still not understanding why you want the harness out anyways
