Engine Removal

Engine Removal
Hey guys. I'm new to the Toyota world. I just picked up a
95 4Runner, V6 (3.0), 4x4, Auto Trans. The engine is locked up.
I bought a new one to drop in, but am having trouble getting the
old engine out. I have everything free except the two top bell
housing bolts. Any suggestions how to reach them?
Will this motor come out seperate, or does the transmission and
trans case have to come out with it?
Thanks,
Cid_4r

You can get those 2 bolts by moving the engine forward about 3 or 4 inches and going in from the top of the engine bay with your wrench. That's what I had to do.
I know the FSM says to remove the engine /tranny together but unless you have a lot of overhead clearance and an engine leveler, I wouldn't try that myself.

Here is what we did.
1 Remove crossover
2 lift engine
3 remove engine mounts
4 let engine slowly down
5 get in there with a wrench
6 get bandaids for knuckles
7 Throw Wrench at local kid in frustration
8 . . .

I have a 2" body lift and can get on those bolts with a long extension & swivel no problem.
It'd probably take you less time and bloody knuckles to put a body lift in it than to take the crossover out in the engine bay.

Using a 20" 1/2" Rachet, I used a solid 1 foot extension, a wobble 1 foot extension, a wobble 6" extension, a universal joint, and a 17mm six point socket.
It was a complete Rube Goldberg contraption, but it got the job done (stock set-up on my truck).

i couldnt get to those 2 untill i pulled the entire assmbly half out of the truck. then it was SOOOOO simple 2 little squezzes of the impact gun trigger and they were off in like 2 seconds... (unlike the previous 45 min i had been cussing them by hand)

There is a trick to it that I wish I had learned before I pulled the engine out.
Use a LONG extension (AT LEAST 36") and a U-joint on the socket end.
