Engine Options

My 90 runner's v6 threw a rod. Talk about my lucky day as this is one impossible engine to find. So how hard would it be to swap over to a 22RE for example. And what parts would I need? Do I need to swap the tranny? i know the wireing harness has to go as well sa the ECU. Has anyone done this before or does someone have a detailed guide to swaping to a different engine?? I'm mostly interested in the wireing harness part, the rest I should be able to figure out

If you're gonna swap, why not go with a 3.4? You could probably locate one at a yard for fairly reasonable, although, 22R would probably be cheaper and easier to find. They're both good engines, one is just more powerful. Just an idea...

With a 4Runner, you'll appreciate the extra torque of the 3.4 over the 4 cylinder. The 3.4 is the definitive upgrade for the 3.0. That'll be my route when the 3.0 dies.

I imagine it would be harder to swap in a 22re than a 3.4 for your 4runner. If you wanted to put a 22re in there, you would have to change your tranny. You would also have to fabricate new motor mounts. If you put a 3.4 in there, you can reuse your transmission, and the motor bolts up to your existing motor mounts.

From reading these boards, I haven't read of anyboy swapping a 22re in place of the 3.0. If there are any, they are very few.

Do a search for 3.4 swap, and you'll get more information.

If I replace my 3zve I do have to replace the tranny as aparently the auto trannys are different enough that they dont work properly, plus the AC modifications, plus i'd need at least a 2 inch body lift or cut a hole in my hood.

Has anyone thought about swapping in a 3VZ-FE?? Its the camry v6, and its dual over head cam, but the block is the same so everything sould just mount up. Would the ECU and wiring harness have to be changed as well???

do a small block ford or chevy swap. them motors are a dime a dozen plus it would be at least half the price of a rebuilt 3.0 long block

As far as cost goes: (these are ballpark figures)

Diesel from Jarco: 5500
7MG-TE: 3950
3.4L: 1500-2000
Chevy swap: 2000?
3.slow: not worth it

Your most lucrative swap is the 3.4L as it has the same motor mounts, is cheap, and provides a good deal of horsepower and torque compared to the 3.0.

Swapping in a 22RE probably isn't the best choise. You're loosing power, different mounts, tranny issues.

Personally, when my 3.0 dies(if it ever does). If my body is still in decent shape, I'm going to swap in a Chevy 4.3. The motors are pretty cheap(found one for $500), parts are overly abundant, and relativley cheap. It's got more than enough power for my needs, it's better on gas, and to top it off it fits nicley into the engine compartment.

Question

I'm in the same situation, but was considering a GM 350 or 4.3. Is that easier than a 3.4? I've heard the harness change is a big challenge and expensive for a 3.4. Should I get a carbed or FI 350 or 4.3?

Im curious about this subject myself being as I've grown pretty tired of my 3.slow, how much modifying is required to do the 4.3 chevy swap?

The 3.4 requires much more work than I am able to do in my garage, as I need to either raise the body 2 inches, or cut a hole in my hood. Orient is out of the question because the motor will have to be shipped out side of the USA and into Canada with adds a conversion factor to the price, plus duty when it crosses the border. The other problem is that there is a large core charge on that, as my core is NOT usable. If i wanted to spend that much I would spend the 300 on the core I found (which I am going to buy) and then pay the local rebuilders the 2500 to reman my motor for me. I am a University student and therefore broke, so a 300 dollar core is great for me, and due to my limited access to lifts and such, body lifts, and mount fabrication are not in my budget

the 4.3 GM is a good engine. it fits well, makes more than enough power, and can be adapted to your V6 transmission fairly inexpensively. it's available in carbureted, TBI, and a couple multiport EFI variants that make a lot of ponies.
