ok here is the history i replaced the timing chain and the head gasket but when i took it apart i pulled off the tps.i put everything back together and properly and set up the tps with the help from everyone here thank you.now when i drive i get the chatter like it is the valves so i adjusted the clearence according to the manual and i still have the chatter i tried a couple of times but no difference.this noise is only when i drive not when i am in neutral could it be my timing thank you.

 

Did you check the timing? is it possibly preignition or detonation?

 

Sounds like the timing is advanced to me too.

When I did mine I set it a little advanced at 8 btdc and I got pinging too so I had to drop back to 5.

Try setting the timing again and retard it a few degrees from where it is now and see if it helps.

edit. Actually I just saw you hear it in neutral too, I'm not so sure th e timing being off would make noise in neutral like that. If it's not the timing it could be anything. Get a stethoscope and narrow down where the noise is coming from.

It's possible that if you had to do a timing job a few valves were very slightly bent and it could just be them tapping on close.

 

thank you, but i only hear it when i accelerate not when it is in neutral.so maybe i have to readjust my tps then set my timing again does this sound right.the reason i say that is because when i first put in the tps i already had my timing set so maybe one is compensating for the other in terms of that my idle is fine.how would you guys and gals restart this over (do the tps first then the timing second)thank you.

from what i understand you can't adjust the timing with the tps out of whack so i would do the tps first.

yes, the if the tps is off shorting the connector to kill the timing advance wont work correctly, and the timing will be off.

 

When your short TEI and EI the engine rpm should drop. If it doesn't then your TPS is not right. Definatly sounds like your timing is advanced.

well i adjusted my tps properly and reset the timing to 5 btdc with the motor shortened it idles excellant but as soon as i drive i can here the tickticktick sound so it does it when i drive but not when i am idling any ideas what that sound is

 

just to clarify the specs are:

22re - 5* BTDC
3vze - 10* BTDC

a ticking when you drive could well be an exhaust leak, or the injectors too. You said you recently changed the spark plugs? It may be worth pulling them and checking for deposits, and/or damage to the electrode.

 

but wouldnt the leak be present when irev the motor in neutral? yes i am at 5 btdc on a 22re thank you very much.

with the ticking present could i be doing damage to my vehicle while i drive it

 

if its detonation it can cause damage. it its the injectors its normal. if its an exhaust leak all its doing is hurting power/gas mileage

 

what do you mean by detonation? how would i check this mma alex i thank you for your help this past week.

 

did you change the spark plugs recently? (i seem to remember you did...I think) take a look at the old plugs, and see if you notice yellowing, blistering, or cracking on the center insulator. Pull the current plugs and check those too.

 

i just checked my plugs and i didnt see sany cracking or blistering nothing yellow they where all whitish brown

 

sounds like youre probably ok then. Its probably injectors. Someone can give you a better description of the noise they make.
