Probably a burnt out bulb. Any auto parts store has replacements.

Is it EFI or carb? Does a carb truck even have a check engine light?

Yes, telling us a little about WHICH Toyota truck you have might help.

The engine light is more commonly called the CEL (or Check Engine Light). Its signal is available on the W connector in the diagnostic connector, so check it there and you'll bypass the wiring to the panel. Then, if necessary, trace it back to the ECM using the schematic. http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/1990-1995...emci/eng3r.pdf

Be prepared for some codes, though. Even though your truck runs "fine," there is probably a reason your predecessor tried to hide the CEL.
