Engine Clacking, possbilities before I tear into it?

I have an '86 Toyota Pickup with a 22RE and it began making a loud clacking sound today. I'm planning to open the valve cover tomorrow to check the lifters and valves but I'm a bit concerned it might be one of the timing chain guides instead, anyone happen to know what it might be to help narrow it down? The sound is the loudest near cylinder 1 on the driver side. See the following link to hear it when I rev the engine.

I've replaced almost the entire ignition and cooling system in the last year including, spark plugs, spark plug cables, coil, cap and rotor, TPS, oxygen sensor, thermostat, radiator, fan and clutch, and temperature sensor, so those should be ok.

I can’t tell much from the video but it is typically the driver’s side chain guide that breaks and then the chain slaps. You can see it when you remove the valve cover. How many miles on this engine?

You nailed it Melrose. I pulled the cover and the driver's side chain guide is mostly gone. The chain has already gouged almost 1mm into the cover too so I'm going to find a lot of plastic and metal in my oil pan. The engine has 340k on it and the previous owner rebuilt it around 120k ago. The rockers and cam are in amazing condition though, barely a scratch on them.

Well, glad you found it. Now you have to decide if you want to pull the oil pan and get the detritus out if there.
i recently did oil pan in the truck and it sucks, i would have preferred pulling the engine.

If you do the front cover to get to the chain, don’t forget about removing that bolt under the disti gear in the oil puddle.

Thanks for that reminder, I had forgotten about that bolt. I wish I could say it was easy to remove the cover and fix that guide but I found out whomever rebuilt this engine last time decided to silicone the oil pan and timing cover to the engine and I couldn't for the life of me pry them off from inside the truck. So I pulled the engine and transmission and doing a complete rebuild now. I had planned to rebuild them next spring but this moved my time table up a few months, which means I won't get the rebuilt block I really wanted but at least I can fix all the transmission issues now.

they put that oil pan on correct. It does get sealed on like that. It's a bear to get off.

I did a timing chain/oil pump/water pump replacement 6 years ago on my '93 Yota 4x4 and encountered the same noise as yours. The driver's side chain guide has the chain tensioned so it's always rubbing it but loose on the passenger's side. The driver's side guide broke so I had to drop the oil pan to get the pieces out. Since I have a 4x4, I had to drop the front diff and the driveshaft to slide the pan back.
