Emissions Removal?

Probably first of a number of stupid questions... After reviewing the Haynes manual, it would appear that all the vacuum hoses are for emission purposes only. 86 carb 4x4 in the middle of a resto,

I have a lot of emission control cans, hoses, etc. and a lot of unattached vac hoses. How much can i delete on the emission and how many of these vac hoses can i plug? I have done alot of google searches and searched through the forum for pics or diagrams, no luck and the haynes is a joke. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using the factory carburetor?

If so, it was designed to use all of those vacuum hoses. Toyota was actually clever in there use of emissions control systems where these systems would improve driveability and thus lower emissions by optimizing how the engine runs under various conditions.

I am using the factory carb at this point. I have seen mention of the weber carb as a replacement. Guess i will be looking in to that.

The Toyota carb is awfully good. Is it running poorly?

It runs good so far.. its new to me and have little experience with the older toyotas so learning as i go here. Ultimately previous owner hacked up the wiring and vacuum hoses and i am working through undoing a mess. The wiring is more straightforward to me but without a point of reference other than the Haynes manual i have had a heck of a time rerouting the vacuum hoses.

Back in the 70's it could be argued that removing emissions had benefits. But by the 1980's I don't think any tangible improvement was made by the removal.

Haynes manuals are poor. They were bad 40 years ago and they haven't improved. The factory manual obviously is best, but if you can find a Bentley manual they were pretty good.
Personally, I'd take pictures of what you have, just so you have a reference, then replace all the vacuum tubing. I like the Toyota vacuum tubing because it's a bit thicker and doesn't flop around like the less expensive stuff. But as long as it's snug on the fittings is all that matters.
The emissions label for your vehicle has everything, but I admit they are tough to read and process. You really need to study to sort it out in relation to the engine you're standing in front of.
The parts schematic is also helpful. Used in conjunction with the label you can probably get most of it figured out. Just takes time. One thing you can't assume is everything is currently connected properly. Mine is EFI, with much less tubing, and I found several connected to the wrong ports when i first got it.
I just grabbed the first 1986 carb vacuum schematic i saw to give you an example what a parts dept diagram looks like, This may not be your vehicle, though i'd guess it'd be pretty close.

Swap it to propane. That will get rid of all the emissions stuff. Haha.

I removed and blocked off what I couldn't remove when I installed the Weber. Runs great!
