Question Electronic Speedo Upgrade

I've searched this, but have yet to find anything about it.

I'm wondering about the feasability of replacing my cable style speedo cluster with a later electronic set up. What are the pros and cons, and do I have to mess with my cruise control, as well? I'm talking about a '90 SR5 V6 5 speed pick up, with a cable that is well on its way out - making all sorts of noise, especially when cold. The thing is a bear to replace, and I'd just as soon get rid of it, all together.

I've never seen the electronic set up, so any thoughts about this idea are appreciated! Thanks!

You and me both. The squealing noise is quite common in our rigs (90-95). However, I am pretty sure that some 4runners/pickups between 90-95 used an electronic speedo sensor. The fact that my '95 has a cable makes me wonder if there was some kind of problem with the electronic sensor, causing them to switch back. Either way, that cold morning squeal is enough to make me wanna pull out my own hair. I'd like to give the electronic sensor a try too.

I don't know what it would take to convert to electric, but it could be a pain. I have cable in my '91, and I have sprayed lubricant down both ends of the cable to reduce squeaking when cold. I hear a little bit of noise from it around 30mph, but not enough to bother me.

I think I used some of that white lithium lubricant (not sure) but it has not produced the loud squeaking like it did before.

93 and up used the electronic style. The things are a pain to lube, the inner cable wont come out, it it could we could easily grease em.

I have to agree - every time that I've had to mess with the cable, I keep wondering why they chose to make a simple device so stinkin' complicated (and nearly impossible to find the right replacement for)?!?!?!

Some of this may depend upon what type tranny / t-case you have. My 92 appears to have an electronic speedo ( no cable ). I looked on the tailshaft of the t-case and there is NO cable screwed into it, only some kind of sensor with wires coming out.

I'd imagine that to change from cable style to electronic or vice versa, would be a real PITA.

My 92 has an A340H Automatic Tranny with integral t-case. T-Case can't be separated from the tranny.

oh for crying out loud, it was probably built in 1986 and had a stock winch, too! Must have been a prototype! ;P
