I have a electrical short somewhere that is cutting off all power to the cab and starter, except to the buzzer when you leave the key in and the door open.

My battery (a new red top) has 13.3V and all the fuses under the hood are intact. I also pulled the dome light bus fuse under the hood and tested to see if power was coming into the box and got 12+ volts.

Can anyone point out a couple of places to check for a short? I'm going to start at the battery and work my way into the cab, but that's really the only thing I can think of.

You're turning the starter on and everything goes dead 'cept for the buzzer?


Sure it's not a bad connection at the battery or ground? Body/Motor?

 

If you put the key in the ignition and try to start it and everything goes dead, then check your battery cables. I just had the same problem on my 4Runner, and it turned out that the positive battery cable was bad. once replaced it starts every time.

Definatelly sounds like a poor connection instead of a short.
A true short with a good battery would be getting something hot or blowing fuses.
Sounds like your dealing with an intermittent "open" circuit.
I agree start with the battery. Use your volt meter and have someone briefly key the starter for you when taking readings. Verify that the voltage remains the same all the way down to the starter solenoid. Then if necessary check the main ground system from battery to chassis and chassis to engine block.

Thanks guys! You were right, it was the positive battery terminal. Took the terminal apart and cleaned it as well as the battery post. Starts and runs like a charm.
