Electrical problems. Long pause before starter turns over?

Well I have and 88 4runner 5speed 22re. Just rebuilt the motor. Sometimes there is a second pause before the starter will turn over. Sometimes it won't even turn over. If I jump it it turns over for a while before it will finally start. I have no idea what this could be.

please help me out

mine does about the same thing. it clicks, then you hear something whining, then it will start. i checked the OHMs, fine. checked the charging system. fine. the starter is pulling the right voltage every time. i think its the connectors inside the starter.

It started as just the clutch start cancel button. But now it does it every once and awhile. The clutch Start Cancel button makes it do that now. I don't touch the button but it does it if I don't touch that button sometimes too.

that button has been disconnected for a couple years now. i dont know how to hook it back up. i didnt find any use for it anyway. lol. did it have a real purpose? or was it one of those things like the buzzer when you opened the door with the key in the ignition.. i chose to leave that disconnected

put new starter contacts in the starter, they wear down unevenly and will cause it to not turn over sometimes

Exactly. My truck went from cranking slow to a pause to just clicking in two days and after new contacts she cranks over like new

from what I have gathered the clutch cancel is for when you are on a steep incline and you don't want to roll back this way you can keep one foot on the gas and one on the brake hit the key and the gas start going as you let off the brake no roll back.

as for you starter take it out and take it to auto zone and have it tested and check your starter relay on the fire wall the FSM has a test for it

The Clutch cancel switch is used for when you don't want to press the clutch for the engine to crank, whether this is in gear on a hill, as you mentioned, simply in neutral, or I have heard of putting it in first and 4lo and taking off slowly out of a mud pit.
