Electric Fan Mod

Has anyone swapped out their belt driven fan for an electric model? I'm trying to think of ways to free up a little umph from the engine. My Runner is really good, until either I use the A/C or the fan clutch continuously engages. I know the a/c is a killer, but in Las Vegas, it's needed.

try the "Search" tool, it's been done many a times...

might even help to search "taurus fan", because a lot of guys take the electric fan out of a Ford Taurus, and with little modification they fit good, and cool excellent

I had one till motor twist put a pulley bolt into fan blades. For interstate thermo switch is fine for trails to save PS pump you'll need constant on, for A/C also constant on. Stock alt puts out approx 60 amp so take that into consideration.

Electric fan made the 22re feel more peppy, though.

haha, I did something like that to my old Monte Carlo I built a 4-bolt main for; mounted dual electric fans, but didn't wire them up right away, so I left the flex fan on temporarily. Well I hit 6k RPMs, and I heard CLACK CLACK CLACK BANG, and looked in my rear view mirror to see bits and peices of $200 worth of my new electic fan scatter across the road...

that was a sad day...

anywho, back on topic, lol

LOL for some odd reason before that trip the little voice in my head said carry mech fan.. I'm glad I listened. Fix motor twisting issue too, just haven't justified the $40 for new fan blade. Charging syatem nevered liked fan and winch.

I must have searched like a 'tool' the first time because I didn't find what I was looking for. A Ford part on my 4Runner? I'll give that a look. Thanks!!

It's been done several times, some guys use the Lincoln Mark VIII two speed fan. I plan on doing this mod just as soon as I can save a little money to buy the parts. It's a darn good idea if you ever plan on doing any water crossings.

Couldn't you use a bungee cord to hold the fan stationary for a water crossing? Its only a viscous coupling (right?).

I put an electric fan from Advance on my 4Runner. A 14" with no shroud. There is a noticable gain in torque and it revs up quite a bit faster. Revs like a little car now. And I have a two way toggle switch down near my fuel filler door button that controls it. The up position simply turns it on. The down position lets the thermostat I wired up control it. I have the thermostat set a 160. So I can leave the switch down 24/7 and not have to worry about it. Lets it warm up quick and stays on after you shut it off til its below 160 degrees. And the best part, i can turn the fan off before going through deep water and keep my distributor drier.

I kind of doubt that would hold it back. Man, I bet that puppy would get hot if it did though and the fan was trying to turn.

I've never seen a Mark 8 with a mechanical. In fact... I don't remember seeing a 4.6 with a mechanical fan, period.

Just pulled a wiring diagram from a '95... it is Electric.

I bought a Mark vii fan but I don't see that there is enough clearance to use it. Its thicker than the Taurus fans. As well as wider and taller:

I'm running an e-fan from a taurus on my truck. It moves MASSIVE volumes of air. It's lived through 2 South Florida summers flawlessly so I'm happy with the way it works. Ive got an on-on switch I picked up from a local marine supply place that just snapped into a spot in the dash. I'm getting power from the plug that the factory clock went into. I didn't have a clock so it was just perfect that the plug was there.

I've got the low speed for the fan running through this temp sensor that is screwed into the block drain plug. It's a perfect fit.

Here is a simple drawing of how I wired it up:

I've got the option of having the fan on low using the temp switch in the block drain plug hole or always on high. I got an on-on switch instead of an on-off-on so don't forget to turn it on. I'd rather burn out a fuse or relay than an engine.

I saw this in a magazine (4x4garage I think) to use for a relay and they work fine so far. I have one for high speed and one for low. I also cut the connector for the big relay from the junkyard car when I got the relay. It has a nice rubber piece that keeps the water out.

I've got a 3" body lift and the back of the electric fan came pretty close to the water pump pully. I had to replace the studs that hold the pully on with bolts so they don't stick out as far. I removed the radiator 3" drop brackets from the body lift kit because they were rotten and falling apart. I didn't need to drop the rad anymore because I wasn't using a fan attached to the engine.
