Not a big poster but I've been around a while. I own a 89 4RUNNER 22RE. Got a quick question:

Has anyone here attempted to remove their EGR system on the 22re?
What was the results?

What I found Searching:
Running rich.
Pinging due to high cylinder temps.
ECU retards timing due to ping.
....but I seriously doubt EGR removal is going to cause ecu to go retarded. I'll accept my bad gas milage, but pinging I question..... thoughts? Experience?

My Story
I blew a head gasket last week so I sent the head off to the shop for a valve job, seals, porting, ect.. I had mention to my buddy about wanting to get rid of the EGR system, and he took my EGR pipe and cut it up to make block off plates. So now I have no choice. I'll let everyone know the results.

 

Also looking for some tips to simplify the maze of vacuum lines

 

Oh ya... forgot to mention I decked the head .015 which sould get me an extra .5 compression. So if the egr removal does cause pingiing (which I doubt). I will know first thing.

do a search of "egr removal" you should find some good stuff.

 

Removing the EGR will cause pinging. The reason is that the recycled gas slows the flame front inside the cylinder, thus increasing the apparent octane rating of the fuel.

I gave him the egr pipe because he said he make some plates for me, I didn't think he was going to hack it all up. Oh well, thanks for the help

I have a used egr valve I will sell you. It needs cleaning. I don't know how you clean the carbon out, but it's yours for $35.00 shipped through a paypal buy. If someone else hapens to want to pay more I will sell it to them.

 

Can you avoid the pinging by running 93 octane fuel? Or does it change it more than that?

 

i'd rather go the cheap route and buy the cheap gas, which is .20 a gallon less than 92 here.

the people who say removing the EGR on a 22RE will improve mileage and power are ignorant IMHO. a properly working EGR will actually improve gas mileage, and will be closed under hard acceleration to not rob power where it is needed.

now, on something like my 20R/22R, it was removed for simplicity's sake, since i don't have to pass emissions, and when i bought the engine to rebuild, it didn't come with most of the smog stuff. only gets about 16mpg though
