The EGR decreases combustion temps, because the exhaust gases are inert, thus less combustible air in the chamber, thus less cumbustion.

Ok guy's n' Gal's. This year I have to take it to the smog shop to do a emission test. Well it fail. Other test perform are good except the NOx fail. The HC (PPM), at 15 miles per hour it measure at 11 and the max to pass this is 118. At 25 miles per hour it measure at 7 and the max to pass this is 98. The CO (%) measure 0.04 at 15 miles per hour and the max to pass is 0.68 %. At 25 miles per hour it measure at 0.02 % and the max to pass is 0.87. The bad part is NO (PPM) Mine measure at 1429 at 15 miles per hour and to pass this I need 999. At 25 miles per hour it measure at 1052 and to pass this is 859. So the guy was stump to why it didn't pass since it run so nice and said that if I got a new engine. So the guy was testing my egr with some vacuum device and plug a vacuum hose into the top of the egr and compress some air into it and the engine didn't do nothing, so he said that it suppose to die, but it didn't so he said for me to replace the egr... So I went back home and took that quarter out and plug the wire back and the vacuum on hose line and hopping no check engine lights is not on, so the next day I went back, and told him I got it fix... He told me is it the gasket and I was giong to say it was block by a quarter but instead I told him it was a bad gasket ... So he test it again and you know what it PASS the CA emission... The measure came up very low at 335 at 15 miles per hour and to pass this is at 999. At 25 miles per hour it measure 183 and to pass this is at 859. Right now the egr is fuctioning, my truck has noticeable loose of power, lots of hesitation like it is missfire and damn filled like I am towing a boat... So I will be blocking it again... So anyone that is in CA that are diong the egr trick when ya are giong to do a emission test. Hook everything back up. After you pass your emission run then block it for another two years of nice driving. Don't worry about the tube that maybe ya have cut it. It still fuctioning good.

1. I would like to see any measurable results to the performance increase everybody claim they get with the EGR block off. Sounds like butt dyno results to me.

2. From Guardian_Saint's results we can see that one of the functions of the EGR is to reduce NOx emissions. NOx is one of the ingredients in smog, and actually the compound that causes the nice brown color you can see in cities that are plagued by smog problems. So you just contribute to local pollution, it has little or nothing to do with greenhouse gases or global warming (just the same way your catalytic converter works).

It still amazes me how much pain and work people are willing to go through to block of factory installed systems that actually have a function, just so they can think that their car runs better.

Rant over.

just blocked mine on a 94 runner 3vze. If any one is going to attempt this make sure you hav a hack saw blade. And a piece of cardboard or something to protect vac lines below. You have to cut the tube on the engine side of the flange flush then file it smooth. The pipe going into the plenum is about 6" long so cutting it is necessary.
End result is much smoother idle and throttle response. Also did the pcv valve while in the neighborhood. LISTEN UP... If you don't think you need to replace the pcv... Don't do it!!! By the time I finally got the old one out (1.5 hours and 2 busted knuckles And some blood loss later) the damn thing was just as good as the new one! It was the worst pcv replacement I've ever done! I usually replace that first thing on any new car or truck I get cuz it's dirt cheap and can really make a difference.
If you absolutely have to replace it, all the best to you lol

yes eger just recirulates hot exhaust gasse in to intake... which is horrible for your engine..

if you get a engine from japan you will find there is no egr valves on there..

the japan gov. encourage the ppl of japan to buy new car every 4 yrs... or around 40k miles or so.. its been awhile sense i been there.. you guys can dig into if you wanna learn more..

japan depends more on critcal timing for emmisions

Ok i have a 86 4runner with 22re and auto tranny. I just blocked off the EGR valve, got the plates from LCEngeneering seems to work great. Now my question is do I need to use a resistor or not? And if so where do I put it?

Nope, I blocked mine off but I fabbed a piece out of a beer can lol. Nothing else needs to be done unless you used the bb trick that some people use. If you just blocked it at the plenum like I did you won't even throw the ole code 71

Glad I found this. I'm in the middle of pulling the engine in my '94 and wanted to unclutter the engine bay some. What is the other "valve" between the EGR and the firewall? I'd like to remove it too.
