ECU and Knock sensor

well, first i have a small truck in a box and i'm just going through replacing all the crap the previous owner neglected to do. So i a week or so ago the knock sensor code came up and i really don't want to buy any more parts, so that said, i've searched here and i'm going to look at the wire and connections, but where exactly is the ECU. I know its in the passengers side dash somewhere, put can you guys give me something specific. Also, there is a plus in the engine compartment thats no plugged into anything, i figured it was just for optional equipment or something. It comes up from under the intake, but if i took a picture of it and where is comes from could you guys figure out what it is or would that be pointless. Thanks in advance.

look in the passenger side kick pannel, the pannel that is next to your right foot when sitting in the passenger seat.

Also check on the floor, just in front of the shifter. I'm not really sure what that one is, but I have a silver ECU looking box mounted there(could be a tranny control box though).

The plug you are referring to may be the Knock Sensor plug. I recently bought a 94 and the idiot PO pulled the KS out .I assume he thought it would clear the code.

ok thanks, i'll check that stuff out today, and get a pic up. Well i can see that the knock sensor is connected, but i guess it could be the other end of the wire.

It won't be the other end of wire b/c that is part of harness. Give us a picture and description of wire.Color etc.

This is the plug from different angles. On a side note, i unplugged the knock sensor and plugged it back in and viola the light went off.

Looks like one of the VSV's. They sit on the valve cover.
The KS code will clear but you need to run at 2500 rpm's to see if problem is solved.

Yeah, i think the plug must have just come a little loose when i went two tacking, yeah its ok, i've gone past 2500 rpms and no check engine light. No the VSV is plugged in, but the wire can go about 3 or 4 inches past the VSV and thats as far as it can reach.

Hmm..well, I don't have my little red wagon handy to look at..it's out with my wife in town. And there's no obvious plug for it anywhere's on top? Are you sure that wire is even routed correctly? If you had a full top view pic of the motor in this moment I could probably help more. That, or I had my own 22re to look at. Sorry...

Yep, there should be a small cluster mounted at the back and on top of the valve cover....on the driver side of it. Your missing that, if I go by my 22re. Trouble is, I'm not sure what they are off hand. But, by memory, I believe it relates to the EGR system and all. However, 'til I look at mine, I'm not sure if that's actually where that wire goes. If you've not had any more input by the time I can get back to you, I'll have a look at mine and report by noon. Sorry, this is about all I can do for now.

BTW, perty distributor cap you got there! Might put a boot on that, if you go through much water.

Okay, sorry to keep you waiting. Long, cold night...slept in.

Well, there must be some differences in wire harnesses from my yr/mdl to yours because I don't have a red one like that anywhere on mine. But, the cluster I was referring to is the nothing but the VSV. In which case, yours is located differently. Erm...sorry again.

However, I would like to know that nebulous wire of yours runs to a bundle of wires leading directly to the ECU. Might have to track it down that way by color code of the three strands of wire. It may actually be nothing more than optional equipment. Boy'o, a wiring diagram sure would help...wouldn't it? Unless, somebody else with an '88 would join in here. ???

Tell you what, though. I'm going to search my motor top AND bottom to see if I may have missed something. Now, I'm just dang curious..lol!

Lol, thanks man, yeah thats what i was figuring and thats what a couple people were telling me. I can get a hold of a wiring diagram, just have to persuade the right people. Lol, yeah, seriously i had a truck in a bad, i've replace so much crap on that, lol. yeah, i should get a boot for the distributor, since i do go through water most of the time i go wheeling. But yeah alright man thanks for the help, if you do find anything then thats great if not, still really cool and thanks for the help. Oh yeah, the VSV is rate in the middle of the valve cover, you can see the two yellowish wires coming out of it. Yea, the wires from the plug go into a bundle that go rate to the ECU. Anyways thanks again

Oh, THAT is the VSV. Lol, gawd..I suppose that's where mine is too, then. I'm gonna have to do some lookin' because now I need to know what the switch is called with the little vacuum lines on the vacuum breather at rear of my valve cover...the one not one yours. That raises the question...what is that thing on the passenger side of the intake toward the firewall with the blue harness and vacuum line going to the EGR modulator? I'm guessing it's the same part on mine that I don't what it's called. (This cold has got my head all foggy...pfft)

Anyhow, I'll keep digging for the answer for you. But, you may want to PM 4crawler on this site. He seems to be an afficionado of the 22re.

OK well i might have found it might have not, although i think your talking about the fuel pressure regulator VSV, and also in one of the picture it has been removed and not an issue i guess, although the plug i have is different.
