The ECT Power Button
What exactly are the advantages/disadvantages of this and which one do do you guys use the most and when. I haven't decided which one is better than the other. Also what are the advantages/disadvantages gas mileage wise?
Thanks much

Not sure on a 4runner, but my 100-series has this button and I keep ON whenever I drive the rig because I'm a man and men like POWER, lol. What I understand is it changes the shift points and holds gears a little longer and also keeps the tranny from going back and forth at those speeds where it can't make up its mind. It's not some magical button that boosts your HP and gives it more fuel to burn - its more to do with auto tranny shift points. Yes, you may notice a decrease in gas mileage since you're now shifting at higher RPMs, thus using more fuel than you would normally; and since you have a little more "seat of the pants" power, you'll tend to gun it more thus consuming more fuel.

I never use it...I want the best mpg's possible. Only times I use it is when I'm passing, hit that and switch off the OD, pass then disengage it and turn OD back on. Never even drove around with it on to see if I can tell a difference.

I never use mine ('94). I've got all the acceleration I need with it in standard mode.
Adjustments could slip slightly over the years, so if others find an improvement by using ECT, I say go for it.

What highonpottery said. When "Off", shifts before redline and locks torque converter sooner than "On" that allows redline shifts, more converter slip = torque multiplier = power. The downside is heat so keep "Off" when if towing to prolong tranny life.

Good post, I didn't know it was bad for towing. Valuable info!
