ECM replacement, what to do?

93 Toy, cab and chassis, V6, auto. Getting a bit ahead of myself here, sent my ECm out for repair and it is scheduled for delivery Thursday.

After some much appreciated guidance from the forum I was left with no option but send my ECM for diagnosis and repair.

The way I am reading this. there is usually something in the vehicle that damages the ECM, I could find nothing wrong with my vehicle, which left the ECM as the problem. I could be wrong?

So if it is an issue with the Toy and I put the repaired ECM in, it could damage it again. Got me nervous.

What to do? Any input, thoughts, suggestions, ideas, advice or wisecracks greatly appreciated. Jim

The computer is a solid piece. A water leak around the windshield or water getting to the computer is what I would be concerned with. I have swapped out many computers and I just make sure the battery is disconnected and have never had any issues.

I have seen numerous wires that were rubbed bare and have not damaged the computer. I guess there is always a chance something like that could happen but I have not seen it yet.

I would be 90% sure your ecu was fine. They are built for automotive applications. it would be very hard to damage the ecu excpet for mechanical damage or water inside the unit.

Like was said about the only thing is water .

Although a voltage spike from hooking a battery up backwards could fry one as well

My cab is bone dry and I have not hooked up the battery backwards, about the only thing I have done that is not normal for me is to use a battery charger on occasion, as the vehicle sits all the time. This is a decent charger capable of putting out 20 amps.

What would be considered a voltage spike, 20V 30V? I am going to hook up my charger and check it's output.

What I did notice in my searching is there is very little about pickup ECM's on the net and loads of info on the 4runner ECM.

Stuff happens cold solder joints fail after all these years .

A trace comes loose no longer making contact

A component fails

This stuff is 20 years old

Pick up 4Runner different number ecu`s but they do the same thing.

Quite a few 3.4 4Runners around compared to all the crushed Tacoma`s of the later nineties Could be why they are talked about more.

Thanks for all the input, Mr Brown delivered the ECM and the recipt says replaced 2 capacitors and corroded trace (power supply).

I wanted to open and see what they did, but it is sealed with tape that says warranty void if seal is broken. Wish I would have took a look before I sent it off.

As far as the information on the computers between the trucks and 4Runners, they are all the same. They interchange with each other on the 85-88 trucks as long as they have the same part number. Most years do have a different part number.

That makes no sense !!

Maybe it was the way you stated it.

As long as a ECU /ECM has the same Toyota Part # they are a direct plug and play .

Though there maybe others with different part numbers that the pin outs are the same .

Without sitting down and comparing both the pin outs no way to tell.

Even though all the plugs are the same just one wire off can cause all sorts of interesting things to maybe happen or not

The good news, the truck started and ran, will not have a chance to drive for a bit.

I have the dual rear wheel cab and chassis. The computer has a different part # and also the letters C&C on it denoting cab and chassis.

It would take a tremendous amount of convincing to put any other ECM in there!
