I know the later model idler arm (post '92) is a little beefier than the early ('86-'92). I am ordering a Downey Idler arm gusset and there is a different gusset for each idler arm.

Are there any features which easily distinguish between idler arms? I do not know the year that my junk-yard idler arm came off of.

 

or, is it possible to upgrade a stock idler to the stronger style?
like me with my 90?

 

I don't think the later idler arm is really much stronger, maybe something like 5% stronger, I don't know, whereas the brace/gusset is maybe 100% stronger.

 

The diameter of the idler rod (haha...rod) is bigger then the 91 and prior units.

My downey idler arm brace was for a 1993 idler arm (I got the arm too) and it fit fine on my 91 arm..
