I pulled out the handle to set the parking brake yesterday and guess what happened? Out came the handle very quickly with a nice snap. I new the cable was getting tired last summer and purchased the front and rear cables, just hadn't done it, but now I have no choice. How hard is it to replace the cables from the handle back to the rear drums? Any helpful hints?

Not hard, just time comsuming. Just take your time and with a little mechanical ability you can do this yourself.

Replaced mine about a month ago. Mine may be a little different than yours. It came as a complete surprise when mine broke. It broke at the very end of the cable on the e-brake handle assembly.

Simple enought to do, just have to take your time. The pin that keeps the e-brake handle in place may be a little tough to get out. Used a pair of locking pliers on it and whacked the pliers with a hammer a few times and it popped out. I had no troubles really. My biggest problem was that after the cable broke I removed the e-brake handle. I should have just left it in place. I could not get the thing back in after I replaced the old cable. It has two little tabs inside the hole that flip up to let you put it back in. The first (closest) one flips up toward you and the other one flips up and away.

mine snapped right in front of the spring where it splits into the "rear section". well 2 clamps later and i have an e-brake cable again, it just doesn't click out 20 spots...

Anyone know around how much to pay for a whole e-brake cable setup? I was quoted $53 a side, and I think that is for the rear split parts only. Does this seem high?

Not to compleatly hijack, but

Does anyone have the AllPro kit that put the rotor on the drive shaft? I want to do rear discs, and the e-brake relocate will be the first step.

Thanks for the replies guys. I did it yesterday afternoon, I should have checked the post first though. I pulled out the whole handle assembly and the lower dash to make it easier. In my haste I didn't realize that little stop that holds the cable in and shuts off the brake light via pin switch was pressed in as opposed to threaded and attempted to twist it out, bad idea, it twisted right off. I fabbed up a new one out of a 1/4-20 carriage bolt by ginding down the threads smooth and squaring off the head, perfect fit and function. It was tight quarters, but the front cable is done and working, now for the back section of cable as I'm sure that'll go next. You gotta love N.E. corrosion.

Yup, been there, done that! (front cable snapped) Replaced w/good used cable/handle assembly. By the way, the 2wd and 4wd front cables are different, just in case someone was thinking of doing what I tried (used 2wd front cable on 4wd).

But then again, when I think of what I'd pay for a new rig, sales tax and excise tax on a new rig, it's not all that bad when you have to replace things. The last year has been fuel lines, fuel pump bracket, upper and lower ball joints, idler arm, e-brake cable and so on, that all would have just covered excise tax.
