omg..people quit tellin me about a 5VZ swap..LMAO i want to do one SOOOO FRICKEN BAD!!!..but we are not very good with electricals..
not to mention it would be hard for me to find a motor WORTH swapping..a lot of the 3.4's i find are like 200,000miles..of course i did find one with 85,000 or so in a flopped tacoma with rear e locker and 5spd..motor still ran too!!! i cant remember how much the guy wanted for it though..

i think i might have this all planned out (unless my 3.0 is CRAP..like not worth rebuilding)
get the crank turned or replaced on the 3.0
new bearings
maybe a couple of new rods (i know..i should do all of them..but..im not HAHA)
and then call it good..of course get the heads checked out to make sure there isn't anything wrong with them
maybe a new clutch if the one in it right now is worn
and thats basically it..less than $500 for sure
NOW on to the good stuff!!!
the ONLY reason to "rebuild" the lower end of the 3.0..is to get it running in preperation of the 3.4 swap..or maybe a 1uz? but probably a 3.4
i still have LOTS of research and parts gathering to do, it doesnt seem to be THAT complicated..as the motors are close to the same plugs are different..but I've heard that you can just switch pins in the plugs..so that wouldnt be too hard of course
ORS's 3.4 swap section is pretty dang helpful..lol
what do you guys think of this..
after i get the 3.0 "rebuilt" then start the parts gathering for the 3.4 swap and do it over the summertime while im out of college!
i think it's doable, it will just take a lot of patience
and i can get Body lifts for cheap so i can clear the hood..although a nice cowl hood would be nice
of course RIGHT OFF THE BAT there wont be a supercharger, or any upgrades like that
but i probably will supercharge it, although I'm a fan of turbos
so what do you guys think about that? "rebuilding" the 3.0 and then swapping a 3.4 like 6 or 7 months from now?????

I'd say save yourself the $500 plus all the other you're gonna have to fix to get it running right and put it towards the 5vz swap. You can get a wiring harness and ECU from a junkyard. I've seen ECU's for under 100 bucks (dealer list price is like 1500).
Sure you'll be down a bit longer than you originally anticipated, however it'll be worth the wait. Trust me, the 3vz and 5vz are night and day difference. 5vz ftw.
Especially if you intend to swap to the 5vz in a little while anyways, personally it seems like a waste of $500 to me to polish a ford pinto when you will be getting a porsche in 6 or 7 months.

well..when you dont have money.and your in college..and have to get rid of one of two vehicles..you need the better vehicle to be running SOON
i can't have 2 vehicles..simple as that..therefore the 4runner has to be running REAL QUICK so i can sell the '86.
yea it may seem like a waste of $500 to you guys, but to me it's FREEDOM (the '86 is only half man..im still payin it off to my dad..lol)
when i get the runner runnin then it will be MY VEHICLE, I PAID FOR IT, THE TITLE IS IN MY FREAKIN NAME. AND NOBODY CAN TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CAN'T DO..LMAO!!!

i got a question, will the oil pan come off on a 3vz without droppin the front suspension or pullin the motor??
i know mine will, but i have a 4in ift lol so idk about the stock runners and trucks
the junkyard wants $65 for the pan then another $50 labor to get it..................................efffff that...

Just so happens I have the Hayne's sitting right here.
Page 2B-13
blah-blah-blah.........
diconnect battery
raise vehicle
remove "belly pan"(nice)
remove bolts and detach oil pan.......detach the baffle plate from the oil pan
no mention of lowering the diff like on my 22re or moving steering components or crossmember...............looks like THIS one might actually be easy!

Now listen, I have not done that yet, I only read it in the book. But my thinking is that probably very much of the time the oil pan is trapped in there by all that stuff like my 22re. So they may have been giving you a standard answer based on what it's "usually like".
There's got to be 3vze guys out there that could weigh in though.
Oh yeah, still hate you. ALOT!

I still don't get it. That thing looks awesome. Why would someone junk it after doing work like that AND keeping the interior SOOOOOOO good. You got yourself an awesome deal there.

EXACTLY what i was thinking......it might be worse than it seems..lol..
tranny shifts fine without the motor running..as well as the t-case, dont hear any clunking in the front end or the rear end either
i know i'll for sure be puttin in a new clutch before it's all over..lol unless it looks GREAT haha
i wish i could find the original owner..i mean the guy that sold it to the junkyard, then he could give me that damn oil pan back!!
im gonna try to get it running by halloween, but i doubt it will happen.... lol..end of november is more realistic i think
gotta diagnose the problem (gotta get an oil pan first)
after that gotta rip the motor out, which could take a while..theres ALOT of stuff to unhook, unbolt, and unplug
gotta order parts (any ideas on some good parts..besides dealer..im lookin for cheap as the motor wont have to last but about a yr at most)
put it all back together
bolt up, hook up, plug up everything
then fire that dude up..and fix the other problems it probably has LOL
yea im thinkin at the earliest..end of november..maybe christmas, because its alot of work, and we still have a jetta diesel to get running, and a geo motor swap to do..LOL

yea my dad drives a geo because of the gas mileage it gets..and he drives 160 miles back and forth to work a day..
dont worry the 3.4 swap will happen....just not for about a year or so..gotta do lots of research and parts gathering first..lol

anybody know of a muffler that sounds DEEP on a 3vz?..i've never owned a 3vz so idk what sounds the best..lol..im thinkin an 18" magnaflow..maybe a 14" i ant real deep..and kinda loud..
dont guess i have to have the CAT on there do i?????? the O2 sensor on it is in front of the cat..and there isnt one behind it therefore eliminating the cat should give nothing but maybe better mpg's..which is always a plus!!!!

since im constantly hearing people have headgasket issues (95% of them at the #6 cylinder) would i be able to take out the stock crossover, and have the exhaust shop build another crossover that runs UNDER THE TRANNY??? since i wont ever be doing any rockcrawling with the 4runner clearance really isnt an issue..
or hell could do kinda like a "true dual" exhaust....and just say the heck with the crossover???
