as long as this mo fo will get ATLEAST 20mpg's after the gear swap..i'll be ok..LOL

it says on my door jamb that i had 225's from the factory..so im guessing 4.10's..

just found out i gots 4.56's!!!! gear code G254(according to this guy http://www.off-road.com/trucks4x4/ar....jsp?id=274535) means i gots 4.56's!!!!!!!!!!!!!

woooo that means it wont be such a dang DOG on the freakin road..lol..

should feel close to the same as my 22r with 4.10's and 31's i hope!!

 

(G254)since G stands for 8" axle..
the 25 stands for 4.56's
and the 4 stands for 4pinion axle..since it is a v6!:banger :: banger:

 

Yeah, it won't be that bad at all. The 4.88's would help though... I drove for bout 5-6 months with 33's and 4.56's. I do have exhaust and performance cams though

 

+1 to that, my pinion seal was leaking and i had a clogged up diff breather.

yea..i still see 4.88's in the future..heck if i still have the '86 in that time maybe i could get the 4.56's put in there!..maybe? idk about the whole 4pinion diff in 4cyl axle? lol

i have a 90' with a 3.slow, 4.56's, and a 5speed and i get around 16-17 mpg but i can get around 21 if its strictly highway miles... on a roadtrip i took this weekend i got around 21mpg cruising 75-80mph in 5th gear.

 

but i have 31's i think you said you have 33's right?

 

It'l fit. Worse case senerio you have to drill new holes in the pinion flange. No biggie

 

yep i got a 4in lift and 33's..LOL so i'll be gettin a bit less than that!

 

Its the gearin that kills it. That and cruising the hwy too fast.

Once I get over 110km/h my mileage goes to poop. This summer I took a 600km roadtrip. On the way up I took the koke, average speed of 130km/h with stints of 150km/h.
On the way home I took another hwy, averaged around 100-110km/h I saved more than $10 on fuel on the return trip

stick around 60mph any faster and wind resistance becomes a huge factor with lift and big mud tires (mud tires grab the air and create huge amounts of resistance).

If I stay at 100km/h I get 21mpg, easy If I had a/t tires I would probibly get 22-23mpg!

Take your time man, don't rush into anything. Trust me, these motors aren't exactly fun to work on (mostly due to old, crispy vacuum lines and poor design/placement of certain components). Do it right... First get an oil pan and a tube of fipg. Get the pan on there, fill it up with oil and see what you have to work with first. First step of diagnosis is to duplicate the concern (which is a knocking noise). First you have to duplicate it to see where it's coming from. Then take the necessary steps to correct the problem. If it's bad rod knock, then pull out the engine and do yourself the favor of swapping in a 5vz instead. It'll be a little more work, but in the end you'll get WAY better gas mileage, make way more power, and have a much more reliable truck for daily use (Especially with a 60 mile commute to school). Spend the extra money now, and you will thank yourself in the end. You have a nice truck... one worth hanging on to. Treat it right, and think long term down the road. Will you still be happy with 15mpg 2 or 3 years down the road, still having to shift to 4th (sometimes 3rd) to make it up the big hills without getting run over?
