drivetrain noise...
in every gear, if im maintaining speed, not accelerating nor decelerating, something in my drive train makes a wining noise. i leaned into the back of my truck and it sounded like it was coming from the rear, so i checked my diff fluid, it was 1/4 L low, but i topped it up and it still makes noise.the truck was stored for about 3 years before i bought it, but the gears were redone a month before it started to sit. the diff fluid is topped up, its not the u-joints, im out of idea's. i hope my ring and pinion are not set wrong. any other idea's? i don't wanna rip out my drive shaft and gear assembly to check anything, but if someone is certain they know the problem it'll have to be done...

Hmmm....if you're sure it's in the drivetrain and it's not a u-joint.....sounds like the diff is probably set wrong. A whining noise is typical symptom of that, as you seem to know. I wouldn't know how to check for that myself, though. Maybe Zuk will chime in.

its not the u-joints, the driveshaft has no play in it at all.. i guess im gunna have to live with it for a bit... if the pinion is not set right, over time can it do alot of damage? or is it just going to be annoying

It could be axle bearings.
I recently replaced all 3 u-joints and the center bearing after hearing a slight moaning sound that started at 52MPH. Problem wasn't fix so i bought genuine Toyota axle bearings and seals and had them pressed in. Problem solved.
