Drivetrain issue - need help diagnosing...

Hey guys,
So I have a new problem that I have no experience with. I have a strange humming noise that sounds sort of like those flappers that you used to put on your bicycle wheel and it would make a ticking type humming noise. Well this noise is similar. Sometimes I can also feel resistance to the truck moving forward, kind of like something is binding. It is not speed dependent, and it happens whether the truck is in gear or not. It only happens when 1 or both of the front hubs are engaged. The previous owner said he rebuilt the hubs, but that doesn't mean he did it properly. The sound is very intermittent, it comes and goes, but usually doesn't start until I've been driving the truck for a few minutes first. The sound is independent of whether the transfer case is in 2WD or 4WD.

My first thought is perhaps a seized hub spring or something allowing the hub clutch gear to engage and disengage with the spindle and rub teeth intermittently. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Now, just to clarify, the sounds is sporratic, it comes off and on, but it happens with only the left hub engaged, and it happens with only the right hub engaged, but it never happens with neither hub engaged.

Any other ideas? Still thinking hubs?

try pulling the hubs apart and checking things out. the fsm's listed at the top of the page will help you trouble shoot this. while you are in there, might as well check the bearings. you dont want them going out on you with winter staring us in the face.

yes they will replace your aisins. just so you know, toyota installed aisins as oe parts. lots of points of view on manual locking hubs though, search it out.

warn hubs have got a bad reputation for reliability when it comes to Toyota, about Warn's only mistake product wise.

See the FSM link in my sig for more help on hubs...I would also recommend inspecting your CV's though more than likely your hubs...

oh and the old playing card with a clothpin on the bike brought back some memoriess...thanks!

Thanks guys, I'll rip off my hubs and have a look. If they're shot, where can I get a rebuild kit? I take it Warn's hubs aren't as good as the Aisin's...

engaging a hub is only really connecting the front wheel to the respective axle half-shaft.
if it only did it with only one hub locked, I'd be suspect of the CV joints on that side.
if it does it with either hub locked, but doesn't do it with both locked, I'd consider looking into the differential and its bearings.
have you drained and inspected the front diff gear oil?

I haven't checked the diff oil. The sound occurs with either hub locked in as well as both hubs locked in. I'll check the oil...

The CV boots are both fine, and the noise isn't really characteristic of a bad CV joint IME.

I'll check into the wheel bearings as well...

I mis-read things....
You say it makes noise if either hub is locked and if both hubs are locked, right?
Given that, I'd still think there may be a problem in the front diff... or maybe in the front propeller shaft and/or transfer case. But since it happens even when one hub is unlocked, I'd concentrate on the differential.

That's correct. I'll take the hubs off and inspect them and I'll also check the diff fluid. Thanks!

might wanna rebuild the hubs anyways, its simple to do, and no, there arent any "rebuild kits" unless you wanna go check out wabfab website... i think he sells some stuff...
anyways, i jsut did mine, and it took less than an hour to tear down, clean, and re-assemble the hubs... just do it yourself...
