Dream has came true.....
Ok long story short my motor in my 90 pickup (22re) has grown tired with its 297,000 miles. Today i found a 87 four runner engine (22re) that is brand new with only 3,000 miles on it, for $300. The only thing wrong with it is the previous owner had a shop install it into his rig and didnt tighten the head bolts down all the way and it leaked coolant out the side. (not into oil) due to they sued the company who installed it they are selling it for cheap. My question is would this work for my truck by just slapping it in?

It's illegal to swap in an older engine into a newer car due to smog emissions just so you know...that might cause some problems with registration if they know this....

that is true, unless the engine mechanical design wasn't changed between the years in question.
since a 22re is a 22re (well, all except the early ones), the long block assembly can be moved between years. The smog equipment itself cannot be brought forward from an older car to a newer car though.
*edit- this is California emissions. other states may vary

well i picked up the engine about two hours ago. All it needs is a head gasket due to i lifted the head to check pistons. Engine looks pristine. Its from a 88 runner i thought it was from a 87. It came out of a california truck so all smog equipment are same. I will use all my emissions stuff for this block but will get new water pump oil pump and timing cover as well as use my valve cover and oil pan. I am so happy its not even funny
