dreaded speedometer squeal...
my speedometer has started squealing, i tried the powered graphite and it worked for 1 day and yesterday i sprayed the liquid graphite (made for locks) into the cable and it didn't help at all. Is there a specific type of oil to use ? ...also there is a small rubber seal in the speedo cable on the end that goes into the back of the cluster, would that make it squeal any ?

I have an 88 pickup where the speedometer cable started to squeal. It seemed to be only when it was very cold outside, needless to say it would eventually stop squealing after a few minutes and I didn't think much of it. That was until the speedometer stopped working a few months after that and still doesn't work today. I didn't put too much effort into fixing it since its an old toy. I am just as curious about this as you are..... Anyone have any ideas???

Have you tried moving the cable? Sorry if that sounds stupid, but it worked for me. After I bought a new speedo cable and replaced it (by the way the idiot that designed this system needs to be tried and convicted) Seemed like it had PLENTY of room where it was, not binding at all. Someone suggested I try moving it, so I did and ever since it's been as quiet as can be.
Just a thought, sorry if that's too obvious.

Is there a write-up anywhere for the cable install procedure ? .....also when i lubed the cable last time i sprayed some lube into the speedo head, did that mess it up or am i ok doing that ?

I replaced my speedo cable a couple years back and the squealing never stopped. I just replaced my speedo today. I'll let you know tomorrow whether that stopped it or not.

I installed the new speedo cable from NAPA today. Seems to work good no more noise and bouncy needle. It took about an hour to do, after unhooking both ends and removing the 3 spots where they snap into the brackets i taped a small rope to the top side of the cable and pulled it out the bottom and then taped the new cable to the rope and pulled it up from the engine side, the rope sure beat trying to get my arms up around the transmission to snake it through
