Does overfillin the tranny w/ fluid hurt the tranny?

Hello again,

Newb story............

In an ambitious effort to swiftly change the motor oil on my truck, I mistakenly unscrewed the tranny fluid drain plug by mistake. As i laid their I began to wonder why my old motor oil had a reddish tint. When suddenly it hit me :pat: . Thats the tranny fluid!!! Dut Da Daaaa. Well I refilled the fluid but as you may know, you dont get an accurate reading when you first pour it in, at least I dont. So i drove it a bit and rechecked. Needed more fluid, added more but couldnt recheck right away. 4 days later i decide to check it after driving it and noticing i kinda slips when driving for a while. Low and behold, I overfilled it about 1 inch past the hot mark. Can this damage the tranny if i drive it like this for a couple more days?

I wouldn't drive it until you drain some out. When you overfill a transmission the fluid tends to get foamy. Foamy fluid doesn't lubricate as well, or work very well in hydraulic systems. That is why it's slipping. The slipping happens when the clutches and bands in the tranny are not tight enough, from low fluid pressure. Any slipping causes wear and heat, and heat is the worst thing for a transmission.

Thanks for the info eric. Guess I'm gonna have to get a little dirty before going home. Ohh well, better that than havin to replace a burnt tranny.

Yes, overfilling an auto trans (you should have clearly stated what trans in your post by the way) will damage it. Leads to overheating (which is death) and other bad things.

Back from the parking lot....

After reading your responses I decided not to waste any time and drained out some tranny fluid. I must admit I did feel a bit awkward laying on the ground with a shirt and slacks on but at least I can drive home with a little piece of mind
