Does this look normal or excesive? (drain plug shavings)
Hello,
This came from the T-case on a 1991 4Runner 5 speed 3.0 with 150K (never been serviced as far as I know?) There were some more shavings inside that I was able to scoop out with my finger and a Q-tip but not too much more... And I will flush a little gear oil through it before final filling, to try and get most out. Does this seem like normal wear and tear for that year / mileage vehicle or is there maybe an issue with it?
thanks,

Ok, good. thanks guys. I haven't seen that much before either but then again, I haven't seen that many of them. That's why I figured I'd ask those who do see many. The oil looked "normal" more brown than black and consistency & smell were what I normally would expect to find. The rear however may have been synthetic? It looked more red than brown. I'm contemplating refilling all with synthetic? Right now I have the front & rear diff's, tranny & T-case all drained while I am replacing the clutch. Should I just use synthetic and be done with them for the next 100,000 miles or just use regular old Dino? It's NOT a wheeler, it’s G.F.'s DD.
thanks,

Just checked the rear end oil in both of our yotas, and they both looked great. Next oil change (@45K), I plan to drain the Tacos rear end and tranny, JB weld some magnets to the drain plugs, fill with M1 gear oil (and TX7 in the tranny) and forget about it barring a flood or something. I recently did several creeks runs @ a TTORA event that put water up to the doors and saw no sign of water in the rear end. If I planned to do much more water like that I would consider running breather tubes to the airbox. If your GF will be done with the truck sooner than 80-100k miles, save your money
