MY '82 4x4 SR5, and '89 4runner both 22R and 22RE had manual hubs.
My '92 4runner 22RE does not. Should I add them to increase MPG?

You might see a fraction of a MPG more mileage over ADD. Bigger advantage will be less wear and tear on the CV joints and boots and a more reliable front axle if you also lock out the ADD parts (or you can leave ADD active).

I just recently bought a pair of IFS hubs, I can't say that my mileage has increased too much, but like 4crawler said, your wear and tear on cv's will be better. I have noticed that I have less pull on my engine when my hubs are unlocked. Plus you have the benefits of 2wd low, which I have found is really cool.

Isn't the 92 alot heavier than the previous generation? Wouldn't weight be a likelier solution to the problem of getting less MPG than changing the hubs?

Either way, your wallet is the biggest winner when you change your hubs to manual hubs. Even if you don't save some pennies on gas, you have less wear and tear on your cv's. But you are correct Tbarnes, weight is a huge factor, at 3500lbs, and a 3.0, not the best combination.

'92 gets better mileage than my '89.. Both 22RE auto.
Average 25MPG (Canadian gallon) tach turns about 2100-2200 at 100KPH (62-63 mph) Truck has 31's and 4.88's I believe. 280,000km on the '92

'89 got about 22-23 but had about 400,000 KM on it. Sold to my Sister-in-law 2 years ago. Still running.

My '91 4R increased about 2 mpg when I switched them out. I did the switch within a month of buying it new back in Feb 91. Went 200,000 miles on first set of CV boots. I went with the Warn Premium manual hubs. Currently with the 16" wheels and 265/75-16 Nitto TG's I'm getting 22.34mpg (verified with GPS and fuel quantity) on the highway. The city numbers are down quite a bit from highway... good thing most of my miles are open highway!

when I was IFS...i swapped to manual hubs and saw an MPG increase....compare the purple curve to the dark blue curve

Stayed away from the 3.0 because of low mileage.
22RE auto's are rare up here. Wife needs an auto.
I think I will look for a set of Aisins. Do I need the cone washers or are they already on with stock drive plates?

They should already be on the drive flanges.

I have a huge noticeable amount of drag when i have both my hubs locked in 2wd, i;d say it drops my 0-60 by almost a second and i need to use more throttle on the freeway (engine braking is very good tho! lol)... but yes, with both hubs unlocked it's much nicer to drive and it's faster.

i'm not sure if your auto hubs are the same as the ones from the 80's but I discovered how unreliable they were last month when i got stuck in the snow and couldn't get to work.

The going rate for manual hubs is less than a hundred bucks u.s. $, I got mine for $50, at a wrecking yard and once you put them on you will know your hubs will always engage when you need them as far as i'm concerned it is the only way to fly. good luck

in therory yes. anything you can do to reduce rotating mass is going to increase gas milage. so not trying to spin the front axles when not needed will help. this is a near future mod on my list.
