DIY Bed cap?

DIY Bed cap?
I got this crazy idea to build a bed cap/camper shell. It would basically be a 1x1 tube frame skinned with aluminum using rivets, similar to a tractor trailer skin. The frame would bolt-in to the bed using plates on the underside of the bed to reinforce, similar to how seat belts are installed in older cars. Anyone try this?

Theres a place in Denver that custom makes diamond plate toppers like you just described. Sounds like a PITA. How tall are you planning on making it? A used fiberglass one would be pennies compared to making your own.
I 2nd the ugliness. May I sugges some clearance lights and reflective tape down the side?

i got a used one a while ago and painted it to match the truck for around $150. looks as good as a cap can look and it was way cheaper and easier than buying new or building one.
