Here we go...

After driving to town a few minutes ago i decided to take a peek under my truck like i do every now and then to check for leaks and such. Well today i looked and saw a little oil on the front diff, bellhousing and oil plug. I sprayed off all the oil, started her up, waited a few and saw a drop or two comming from the bellhousing so looks like next weekend i'll be pulilng the tranny to get the seal replaced. It wasn't a noticeable leak before but now i can see its getting worse. Any hints or tips before i dive into the seal? I have pulled the tranny before so thats not going to be a problem. Thanks as always.

do a write up on it i would like to see how its dun gotta do mine to but to lazy and its to cold

Unless you have oil all over the bottom of your truck it is unlikely that you are leaking significant quantities of oil.

imagine this,

Pour 1 quart of oil out on your floor and see how big of a mess that is. do you have that much of a mess under your truck?

Don't get me wrong, I believe oil leaks should be fixed, but I have customers coming to me all the time telling me their cars (or trucks) are leaking oil. then after I fix the oil leak they tell me I've done something wrong because their engine still looses oil.

So if you are trying to fix an oil consumption problem. Make sure the leak is the problem.

i'm very sure this is the culprit as i have been losing oil for sometime now and its not being burned nor is there any on the engine anywhere...it isn't a major leak by any means but i cant stand any leaks..

Mine is leaking a small amount in the same area. I plan on dropping the tranny and fixing it this spring. Since you've done this before how hard is it, what are some tips or anything that will make it easier?

get a tranny jack, it helps alot. if you cant get one use 2 floor jacks and a buddy to help you. if i remember correctly i had the transmission on both floor jacks let down all the way and the only wire i had to disconnect was the one right above where the linkage does into the tranny. there's not that much to it, unhook the coolant lines, disconnect one end of both driveshafts, bellhousing bolts, torque converter bolts and disconnect the transfercase and tranny linkage. there isn't much to it, about an hour or two probablly.

Appreciate the info, once you get all the bolts out, do you have to pry on anything to separate it from the engine. Or does it just come right apart and then just lower it?

you may have to do a little prying but mostly push it back toward the rear of the truck then drop er down..
