I used the write-up on the 3rd gen and cut the white with black stripe wire going to the DRL relay but still, lights are on.

Help pls...

I've never known a 2nd gen to have DRLs. Is that something special on Canadian 4Runners? Maybe there is some other electrical problem causing them to stay on. Never heard that one before.

Yep,
Canadian vehicles after 1990 have federally mandated daytime running lights. The problem with toyota is they put a module in that basically turns all the lights on. Tail lights and everything comes on. The only reason to turn on the headlight switch is to access the highbeams. I think you can just unplug the module. Mine doesn't switch on intermittanly when i start the truck, so i think that if the module is unplugged then they won't come on. I think the module is in the steering column area. Don't know if it will disable the whole lighting system, but it shouldn't. I may try this as well and let you know.

The DRls on a 2nd gen are gounded through a resistor located on the driver side, just behind the coil and igniter. It's the one with the 'Caution Hot' warning on it. Disconnect that and the DRLs won't go on.

 

pics pls. also, did somebody was able to make some sort of a on/off switch for the DRL?

 

I have a problem with my brake lights.. even when the truck is off, if you press the brake the lights come on! I thought this was related to my daytime lights as well that didn't seem to make sense (the first click of the light handle doesnt do anything as the daytime lights are already on).

Any ideas? lol

 

I,ve been waiting for this thread to come back for a while now, and I,m very tempted to cut the ground to the resistor. Has anybody tried this? I guess I could always splice it back together if it does not work. After Christmas I will give it a shot and see.

 

Doesn't your resistor have a wire connector near it, my 93 4Runner had one. I assumed it was original, but maybe it was added by a previous owner.

 

Ive run into this one as well...... check your rear tail lamps..... mine had cracks allowing them to fill w/water. If you find water... clean and dry w/compressed air. A good drying, a shot of wd40 into the bulb sockets, and a little duct tape on the lens and no more problem. It worked for me.

 

Has anyone yet to Post pics. I looked today and couldnt see that wire 'Caution Hot' Day time running lights piss me off. I would like to disable them so then I could actually run some Silverstars or something.

 

if i leave my head lights in the On position, they turn off by themselfs when the car is off and i open the drivers side door. does that mean i have the canadian DRLs?

 

No Day time Running lights mean that as soon as the truck is in gear your low beam head lights come on. All the canadain drivers know what i am talking about. They also make it so that we only need to turn the head light switch on to get high beams and interior lights.

 

I tried to disconnect the resistor on the drivers side fender. The little black box behind the coil but the lights still come on. Theres 2 wires comining out of the black box and I tried them both but no go. I did not see anything that said HOT...

 

I'll call one of my buddies at a toyota dealership and see what I can come up with
