Digital to Mechanical Speedo Info | 1986 Pickup 4.3 Swap

Hey all, sorry if this is posted in the wrong spot.

Here's whats going on, I'm currently swapping a 2001 4.3 vortec into my 1986 toyota standard cab pickup (22re). I purchased an r150f transmission and transfer case that has an electronic speedo.

I'm hoping someone either has the answer or can point me in the right direction with at least one of the following:

A. Is it possible to adapt the tcase electronic speedo to my mechanical speedo gauge cluster?

B. Is there a newer year gauge cluster that will fit my dash that has an electronic speedo?

C. Would it be easier to modify my tcase to use a mechanical speedo?

Thanks in advance, I have searched everywhere but can't seem to find an answer.

My son had 3rd gen trucks (91 and 93) that had instrument clusters that swapped with either electronic or mechanical speedo but your 86 never had that option that I know of.

I "thought" I've seen electronic adapters out there to go from mechanical to electronic but not the other way.

I believe there are adapters to mount your gear drive RF1A T-case to your R150F trans though. If you can run your original case you can use your original speedo. You can buy a short cable extension if you need extra length. The ones they sell for dual case setups.

Dakota Digital or similar company might have a dash cluster available with GPS speedo??

I think 1988 4Runner and pickup had 3.0 V6 option and that dash may still have been mechanical speedo?? Is your R150 an early model from a 3.0 V6 truck? The later models from a 3.4 truck are different.

The ebay ad said the r150f is from a 89-95 3.0 forerunner, but I figured it was probably a 92 or so based on the electronic speedo. I was hoping to keep it since it came with the transmission and has fairly low miles. I will look into the dash options some more as well as the Dakota Digital. Thanks for the reply!

Maybe you will be able to just get the mechanical sender and swap it out?? Might be worth a call to Marlin Crawlers shop or any other Toyota specific shop. Or look up part diagrams for the T-case right at the year split to the electronic speedo. It might be as simple as swapping out the electronic sender to the cable driving unit.

Good luck with it and PLEASE follow up with what you find so this isn't a dead end thread.

I did a quick search and found this here on yotatech. This is pic of the two senders side by side. I'd see if you can check the parts listing for an 88-91 or 92? 3.0 powered truck with a manual trans and the same T-case as you have. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/atta...n-img_0828.jpg

Were you able to swap out the electric sensor that's on the transfer case with the mechanical one? I'm in the same boat, have an '89 4Runner with a 3.4/R150F swap which I believe came out of a '98 Tacoma. Currently there's an electrical sensor on the back of the TC and my cluster gauge/speedometer is cable driven.

Unfortunately no, im still not sure if it can be done or not but I ran out of time and money and ended up throwing the 22re back in and calling it a day. Sorry, best of luck!
