differences between 22r heads

when i was getting my head done and i ordered the head gasket kit they had nothing for an 87 carbed motor. i've had trouble before with places saying that the 87 didn't come carbed. i found out the motor came out of a sfa toyota either 84 or 85 so thats what i ordered the head kit for. all the gaskets worked except for the exhaust manifold gasket. so i went back to the shop and they think i have a fuel injected head on my motor. i have a efi motor here and the manifolds are the same except for the sensor in the efi one and the gaskets are the same. i ended up putting the old gasket back on the truck cause the shop wanted me to modify the other one to fit. buddy didnt want to buy me the right one cause he said the efi head kit is more expensive it was a big hassel. anyway i wanna find out whats going on with my motor so buddy has to replace the exhaust manifold it if its the wrong one,and i'm debating on buying a header and wanna make sure i get the right one to fit my truck. i will take a pick of the exhaust manifold gasket i got in the kit tomorow. in the middle of it below the diamond shaped part it has one bolt hole in the center and the ports are one big circle and a seperate small circle on top of the big one. the one on my truck is the same as my efi engine which has 2 bolt holes in the center of the gasket offset to each side and ports are one hole. any help would be great and i will try and get some pics up asap

Carbs were available across North America through 88. And it's possible to find one up through 91. However, from 85 up, the 22r and 22re are the same basic engine with subtle differences in the cam (eccentric lobe for the 22r fuel pump / spacer to remove the eccentric for the 22re- so the distributor wasn't affected), but nothing is different with regards to intake or exhaust gaskets.

To summarize- 85 - 95 22RE = 85 - 88 (maybe to 91) 22R... unless someone swapped in an earlier, incompatible 22R engine (84 or earlier).

mines the same as the 88 22re i have out in the yard. the box my head gasket kit came in says 84-85 22r,so for some reason i'm guessing i got an earlier exhaust manifold gasket.
