Well I decided to change my diff fluids today and while I was down there I extended the breather. Tell me what you guys think...







I wanted to run it all the way up to the gas cap area but I didn't buy enough hose . So instead I put it where NO water will ever make it, through the wheel well and inside the truck...





One question on this... All I did was cover the stock breather with the hose because I was not sure whether or not I was suppose to drill a hole through it or just cover it. So I thought it would be easier to just take the hose off again if I DO need to drill a hole in it rather than go buy a new one. Did I do it right or does there need to be a hole drilled in there?

 

You are supposed to replace the OEM diff breather with a union fitting w/ a barb, hoseclamp the hose to the barb, then put a breather on the other end...but I just used a small air filter.

Brian you just use a small air filter? So if I am thinking correctly, no pressure ever builds up in your diff?

 

Yep, some little air filter that has a place to put the hose on teh end and hoseclamp it on...got it at a local auto parts place...about the size of a cupcake...did both the front and rear and ran the hose up to the top of the firewall...water gets up that high...I'm swimming anyway.

 

sorry for the dumb question.. but whats wrong with just running a hose? why the union?

For an 8in rear, which that is just unscrew the breather take it to the vice. Tighten on the bolt part and pull the top off with a pair of plyers a little cap and spring will come off. Now just clamp your hose over that. I did that and been running it for 3months.

 

I have a little fuel filter on the end of mine.

 

I did the union fitting and put the barb from the diff on the end of it. I ran mine into the tail light.

 

i totally did read it and they didnt say (as far as i could tell) why you can't just run a hose connected to the toyota breather.

 

screw the $2 nissan part whatever they make that fits in there.

pop the cap off, pull the spring nad lil rubber pad off. get some hose a good hose clamp and you're set.

ive yet to have my hose come off the rear dif even goin through nasty branchy swampy goop. i've even had crap get hung up on it. long as you get the hose clamp on there good it aint com'n off

i ran my hose into my tail late (pickup, not a 4runner).. and i left the end open. fluid is still fine.
