Cool Devilish hum in the engine

Hey everyone. I have recently acquired a 92 Hilux (4Runner) with V6 and am wondering what is the sound when you start moving and the engine is cold (?) under the bonnet - it is like a giant fan or something, IS it the fan?? I also heard this on a number of other trucks and not necessarily Toyotas..Sounds like a bunch of devils mating under the hood Is it the fan clutch "lagging" behind or what? Also I have noticed sometimes when the engine is hot and you just stop and turn the engine off the fan still keeps spinning for a second or two, almost like it is spinning way slower than in "engaged" state. Does that mean it never "engages"? The engine never overheats and is always stable below 50% of temperature gauge.
Thank you Also with my 95K miles should I be thinking about a new catalyst?

When I first start my engine, the fan howls for a couple of minutes until it heats up. Then it's fine. That's the viscous clutch. No worries~~!

i didnt want to start a new thread just to address this one question, so i thought i would post it here. since it has gotten to be a ltitle colder here in gainesville when i start my 02 v6 4runner up in the mornings it idles real high 1.5-2k rpms and whines, the whine matches the throttle speed which leads me to believe it has soemthing to do with my fan or belts. once the engine is heated up it goes completly away, i was thinking of switching to 5w30 oil instead of the 10w30 i have in there now, but a) it doesnt get cold enough here for it b) ive heard my engine likes 10w30

any help is appreciated
