3.0 problems

1990 3.0 v6 4x4. My pickup seem to not want to warm up for a long time. Sometimes it almost seems as if it is idling to high. New fan clutch, radiator, thermostat, water pump, sensors. The worst part is that when it seems like it had warmed up, the motor still doesnt go to OD because it thinks its cold. (automatic) It has some sort of a shift block but only needs 157 degrees to shift. With a 180 thermostat that should be plenty. I can pretty much fix most of the truck but when it comes to electrical i am underprivlaged. I have had it to toyota multiple times and they say nothing is wrong. Any ideas thanks

Hey tjgray, bear with me, this is my first time posting. I too have the same problem with my 4Runner. In fact, I took it up by Yankton SD yesterday, it seemed to cool down as I drove, and would come out of OD. It is frustrating to say the least, especially when you can watch the gas guage go down.

I'm not sure if this will work, but the thread below talks about your problem. If it doesn't work, I did a search for "shifting", it is titled "A340 shifting when cold".

I ended up putting cardboard on the LH side of my radiator, it still has the fan open to cool it.

Good Luck, let us know how it works out.

Jerry

Jerry, the truck seems to run at a even lower tmp with a toyota thermostat. Im not real sure how to go about it but i have tried to block off some of the radiator before and it doesnt do much good. It seems like the dummy temp guage needs to be half way up to shift to OD but it barley comes up at all.

Hey TJ,

I just checked Autozone, they list a 195 degree thermostat, I am going to try that. I thought the cardboard helped, it could have been coincidence. Are you sure is it is getting hot? Can you rig up a mechanical heat guage? (non-electric)? I know they have had problems with the temp sender for the OD shift, there is probably a thread if you look deep enough. If you go to "4runner FAQ's" and email Robinhood, he could probably help you too.
Good luck, it may take a little digging, but you can solve the problem.

Also, you can go to Autozones website, they have a tab on the left "repair info", that may help also.
