Ooooo I'm really feel dumb now. I should have known what you were doin, just didn't see it done like that before.

well I drove the 4runner this morning and even though I lined up all the timing marks, it feels like there is not much power under heavy acceleration. The lack of power points to a timing issue, so when i got back from the drive I put the engine on TDC compression stroke(loosened the #1 spark plug so I could here pushing out as it compresses air) and 0* on the #1 timing belt cover.I then looked at the marks on the cam sprockets and the marks on the #3 timing belt cover and sure as I expected they are off.The R.H. cam sprocket looks to be off by 1 tooth but the L.H. looks to be off by 2 teeth thus causing the lack of power..I don't know how I did this...but I did...what is your opinion on my assessment?...pay no attention to the markings on the belt
Right cam sprocket(passenger side)

Left cam sprocket(drivers side)

it's raining here so I can't do anything about it right now, but will make the necessary adjustments when I get a clear day...so the 4runner is not back on the road yet

yes I did that when I did the timing belt change 2 revolutions to make sure the all timing marks line up.I don't know why I didn't do it this time.well it will take a hour or so to make it right

maybe taking the cams and cam sprockets off had something to do with what happened....but in the pic I show the cam sprockets timing marks aligned with the timing marks on the #3 timing cover....I guess the belt jumped or something?

oh well...live and learn

when i changed the timing belt on my 94 mazda protege dohc 1.8 liter you had to use 2 17mm wrenches on the cams and pull both of them inward and have another guy put the belt on..

update...went for a drive this morning and the 4runner is good and the timing seems where it should be.............so she is back on the road until something else happens, which with this 4runner something is always happening

good luck to all who do this head gasket replacement!!........it was a challenge!!.....take lots of time and pay attention to details....I wish I could have reworked the heads but it was not a option for me since I had to get it back on the road with limited funds and a time line to meet.

thanks.....with a full time job, and working every available hour on the 4runner even in conditions harsh weather and no garage just a home made tent that slowed me down. I feel good that I almost met my goal but not without a price!

I had to put my family on hold during this time and the 4runner took president over almost every thing because I needed another vehicle on the road quick

This was some what of a complicated job for me, not that I couldn't do it but that it takes a lot of patience to work in all the cramped spaces, combined with all the tedious work involved

I know some folks can do this job quicker than I did, but for a 46 year old I have to think more about every single move I had to make and make every single move count, so if i get lucky I will not have to do the job over again for a while....

When I was younger I would do things quicker and had to do a lot of things over because of that...I'm older and somewhat wiser not and think a lot about what I'm going to do before I do it now....know what I mean?

Thanks yotatech!!! for all the information!! I could not have done the job quite as well without all the valuable post from others on this topic

this thread topic is open to all who want to ad to it, with good advice on how they would do a specific part of the head gasket replacement

I used a 1.5 mm allen hexagon per the FSM key....but use what ever will work for you just make sure it will be strong enough to hold the push rod in and can be pulled out without any problems

Had a couple questions on a head gasket replacement of my own that I am starting. I decided to post on this thread cause my truck blew it's own head gasket and I decided to do some research on the steps to replacing it and low and behold buckz was in the middle of doing his own and this thread has already been a big help before I even got started (thanks alot bugs 1961).

I had to modify it a bit to make it work on the crank pulley but a rad idea never the less. I had a couple questions that I ran into early on today. FSM says (for the intake manifold removal) to disconnect the two fuel lines and the two heater hoses. I found one of the fuel lines while I was disconnecting the whole vacuum cluster on the drivers side engine bay where is the other one. Last time I dove this far into a 3vze was when I was replacing an engine on a friends 4runner and when we pulled out the crapped out engine a fuel line was still attached and it end up busting up and we had to pay for a new one and I was just trying to make sure nothing like that happens again on my runner. thanks for any help on that and if I need to repost somewhere else for whatever reason just let me know.

Looks good buckZ. I did the same think with my HG job. It really does go back together faster than it came apart...

fuel lines on the intake in RED(the fuel line in the middle on right side at R.H. goes to the cold start injector), heater hoses in Blue and banjo fittings for the fuel lines are yellow arrows(all the fuel banjo fittings have (2) spacers each...don't loose them (1) goes on the banjo bolt then the bolt goes through the fuel rail then the other spacer goes over the end of the bolt just before it screws into the fuel rail.If you don't put them on correctly when you pressurize the fuel system you will blow fuel and that's not good...hope this helps

but yeah you just helped me realize with that pic that I am ready to take off the intake manifold and the other fuel line can come after that so... rad. This is the type of stuff you don't get in the autozone online manual.
