thanks for the encouragement!!.....I will clean up with industrial strength machine cleaner when I'm all back together and running

now besides finding out what to use to clean the mating surfaces (FSM reads use a gasket scraper but I'm not sure if that will remove the imprint of the old gaskets from the block).

I'm a bit worried about the head bolt torque, I know the FSM has a procedure for this and I'm researching it now....I just pray that I get it right the first time

paint scraper, razor bladed wire brush. wd40 is a very good cleaner.. thats what i did.

used a fine triangle file for any knicks or gouges

I started to clean the block surface with this pad and a right angle air tool ...I hope this is ok to use?....I don't think it will damage the cast iron block but maybe I'm wrong

looks like I have some pitting in the block, but hope it will be ok, and will seal with new gasket....can't afford to pull the block and have it machined....what do you folks think?

as long as you have a flat surface you should be good get a straight edge and a feeler gauge and any gap under .003 i wouldnt worry about it.. check your head with a straight edge too.

I'm looking at Buckz pictures of his finished work, and am using all the many threads on this 3.0 headgasket job to learn me everything. While the tops of his heads look great, my question is about the gunk and stuff in the non rag plugged areas, does all that need to be cleaned out too? Or is that another step and he was just prepping the heads. I didn't see anything mentioned about those areas anywhere else, just making sure the mating surface is clean?

( Sorry, not trying to thread jack, trying to clarify so I don't screw mine up when it comes time )

i would stuff some rags in the cly. so you dont have debri fall down in the cly. and keep alot grinding stuf out of there.

it will take a good wiping.. blue shop towels wd40.. works good..

no problem with cutting in on this thread.....I was worried about those openings also....I plugged the bolt holes and oil passages with shop towels on each block mating surfaces and left the water jacket holes open and will flush out the cooling system once put back together
at least that's how I'm doing it....not a professional here just trying to get the old girl put back together

any suggestions will be appreciated

i use the same type of pads (generally..mine are black and maroon lol) on all of my motors and haven't had any problems yet..and i plan to use them when i rebuild my 3vz

thanks for the input about the disc pads....didn't get much done today cleaned the block head surface and the L.H. surface, it's cold here in Ga, been about 25 degrees with wind chill (which is cold for Ga weather) for the last few days. I don't have a garage any more this is my home made shelter, not the best but it works for now.It keeps the wind off me and the little heater makes it bearable

Camry to the left has a bad tranny so both yotas are down and the Focus & PT are still running...go figure

It looks like it's a mess when it's all out. But I did my 22re headgasket with some help. Well, getting it apart I had some help, and putting it all back together I did it myself. Half of it in the dark. It was my first big project.

I shouldn't say I did it all myself. I had some help installing the cams and head.

looks like a mess is correct!!. congrats on doing most of the work your self! ..the last time i had to do a head gasket replacement wan 20 yrs ago and on a Ford Camper Special 460 in her but didn't have all this electronic bull crap and didn't look like this when it was apart.LOL......but maybe it did
