My decals on the side of the truck are peeling and need to come off. Has anyone used anything that made the job less frustrating? I saw a tool online that had some sort of heating mechanism along with a thin blade that claims it will peel the decal completely without harming the paint. Has anyone tried this or any type of removal chemical that was safe?

You can use a heat gun and some WD-40 to get rid of the residue.

blow drier and a razor blade.... then go back over it with wd-40 to get all the tacky stuff off.

hey,
i used gasoline and an old credit card. afterwards, i cleaned with soap and water then waxed where the decals were.

Use care with the heat, just enough to soften the decals. and I would not use razor blades but something made of plastic or wood that would be less likely to damage the paint. Talk to someone at an automotive body shop supply and see what chemicals may help.

The 3M eraser tool worked really well for me. Just like a giant rubber eraser that attaches to a drill. Make sure you use a corded drill though.

I've always used a hair dryer and WD-40. Works great and doesn't damage the paint

i just took em off with a razor blade. i was gonna get the other side done, but then i rolled the truck and repainted. lol.

When you guys take off the decals, did you have to use a clay bar to deal with the shiny newly exposed paint? I am wanting to take off my pinstripe on my 3rd gen. If the clay bar does work, is that something that I have to keep redoing to minimize the removed pinstripes pinstripe. I don't want to do it if I have to do it once a month to not see where the pinstripe was.

the removed pinstripe pinstripe is not noticable on my 89 yota PU and they came off super easy with a blow dryer and a can of that stuff from the auto store that removes bumper sticker adhesive. yep. pretty darn easy

Lacqor(sp) thinner worked super fast for me, but I am repainting the truck gun metal, so I wasnt worried about the paint even though it wasnt on long enough to really get into the paint, oh and the credit card helped shave it right off.

i used "3m stripe off wheel" to take off my pinstripes. works like a rubber eraser and it didnt hurt my paint. just snaps on to a drill. really easy stuff to work with

Blow dryer and credit card removed the decals with ease.... Now I just need to get rid of the sticky residue. Having some issues even after using the WD-40 and Goo Gone....

Try lighter fluid on the residue. That seems to work well...Just wash off the truck afterwards and you should be all set.

3M also makes this stuff called "Woodgrain And Stripe Remover". Spray it on kin of thick and let it sit for a little bit and the decals will peel right off. Works well for big decals like a station wagon. For the little pin stripes I agree that the eraser wheel or hair dryer work fine. Typically I have to polish out the car afterwards because the paint beneath the decal is glossier.

Right now you can because of the residue.... After I clean it up and wax it I'll let you know.

Lighter fluid, huh? I'll give it a shot... Someone mentioned gasoline too.. I'll try anything at this point as long as the residue comes off and my paint isn't damaged in the process... Thanks!

Gasoline is going to be a bit harsher, and tougher to work with because of the fumes. I'd go the lighter fluid route first. It's always worked for me...and I've used it on anything from the slight residue left after a window decal to the thick nasty stuff left after a body trim piece was removed.

I've also heard good things about the 3M Woodgrain sticker removal stuff as well....I could never find it in any of the stores locally.

I brainfarted last summer and had the wrong tip on the pressure washer while cleaning off mud. Peeled the 'A' off the tailgate and the rear tip of the side stipe before I woke up and realized what I had done. Now I have a 'TOYOT'. Didn't bother the paint one little bit in my case, but I'd take this as more a "what not to do" response. I think all it would take is a chip in the paint and I'd of gotten bare metal!
