Cure for bent IFS tie rods / idlers?
#21
So, you installed an idler arm from a 2nd gen on your '86?
I am trying to determine compatibility of idler-arms with different years. I had a difficult time installing a 1994 4runner idler-arm with downy brace on my 1987 4runner. Ever since then, my tires have worm unevenly, and the steering wheel is 20-degrees off "straight".
Does anyone know if this '94 idler-arm is indeed compatible with my 1st gen?
Thanks.

contact Superlift and see if they have any parts left over from their super-link IFS kit. It had a relay-rod stabilization system (2nd idler arm in the center of the rod) to help prevent the "roll" that happens when the tie rods push inward and upward. This should be an addition to any vehicle with a lift and front-mounted steering components (Toy, chevy, etc) and should go a long way to saving the steering...
I've had that kit for 10 years and I have yet to bend an idler arm or tie rod.
Here's some pics of the lowered relay rod if someone wants to copy it:

I went with the TC part. It's not cheap, but in the almost two years since I put it on my idler has not bent and my alignment isn't knocked out much anymore. Other than the cost, there is almost no down side and a very significant upside.
